Stage 1

Liz Debolt
I work at creating organic forms through expected and unexpected materials in sculpture and oil painting. I have primarily used painting as a medium but am beginning to more widely explore sculptural forms and installations. I create organic forms over calculated structures because I feel a connection with nature, life, and things that can grow. I find safety not having to create something perfect but rather something with flaws, which to me connotes honesty.

An accident, though I didn’t know it at the time, would mark the beginning of the theme of the human body and mind through my work. I was dragged backwards under a canoe through rapids into a pile of snagged trees. This sandwiching collision stretched part of my pelvis apart and I have been in excruciating physical pain ever since. During the worst stages of recovery I learned how to dismantle my body from my mind and interact with myself as though my physical self didn’t exist. I have slowly learned how to come back from that state of being or non-being with the help of modern medicine and physical therapy.
