| Davis-Rosenthal, Jim, Computing | Jim Davis Rosenthal has worked for SASC for 19 years in a variety of capacities, beginning in SASC's writing program, continuing as the communications and computing coordinator, and eventually serving as the department's Associate Director and as one of the founding directors of the McNeill Academic Program. Now the Director of Orientation for the university, Jim continues to carry a caseload of SASC students and supports the departmental databases that aid each of SASC's programs. | |
Lawlor, David, Coord. Communications and Computing |
I used an Apple computer for the first time in 1980 to design graphic plots in 6th grade math class and have been loyal to the Macintosh platform ever since. I am a graduate of Fort Lewis College in Durango and the CU teacher certification program. I joined SASC in 2000 after working as coordinator for the Norlin Library outreach program.

Wilson, Ken, SASC Program Director , McNeill Academic Coordinator![]() |
During my early career years I taught science, social studies, and math in Navajo Nation schools. In the summer of 1978 I taught math in UCB’s American Indian Educational Opportunity Program, one of the ancestors of SASC. I’ve worked full-time at the university since 1982, always focusing on issues of equitable access and high achievement for students from all backgrounds. I’m proud to play a role in the strong contributions SASC’s staff and students make to the university community.
| Winn, Cindy, SASC Admin Asst. | Cindy Winn is a Colorado native and alumna of CU Boulder (Hist. '87). | Glasscock, Jim, ELL Tutor | In my time as ELL Writing Consultant I have worked with students from over sixty different countries, and learned a lot about language in the process. My own studies have included multicultural education, classical antiquities, languages and history. I grew up in Colorado, though I have done some traveling. | |
West, Dan, ELL Coord., McNeill Academic Co ordinator![]() |
I am SASC’s ELL Coordinator, and I have been working with non-native English speakers at the University for 18 years. Although I was born and raised in the hectic urban area of Alexandria, Virginia, I was never much of a city-boy. So, 28 years ago I took off to travel across the country and looked for a more laid-back area of the U.S.A. When I came to Colorado, I knew I had found place. While here I attended CU and received degrees in music history, education and English literature. I sometimes wonder if I will ever leave the CU campus.

Smith, Susan, McNeill Program Director, McNeill Academic Coordinator![]() |
I know a woman, she is old now, who graduated high school prepared to enter nursing school. She telephoned the nursing program to inquire about application and enrollment options. The call was very encouraging and informative assuring the woman that she was welcome to apply -- very qualified, and thus stood a good chance of gaining admission to the program.
When she arrived at the nursing school as directed, she was told she could not apply. The difference between her telephone experience and her personal experience was that her voice did not identify her race, but her physical features did. This reflects one of the saddest intimately held stories that I know, because it speaks to expansive possibility vanquished by narrow-minded habit, and because I will always wonder who this woman, my mother, might have become if she'd been given the opportunity she worked very hard to earn.
Now, it is my privilege to work with the McNeill Academic program as director. Every day my colleagues and I engage the best practices we have -- those gathered from experience -- our own and that of our students, from the literatures of education and student development, and from our professional colleagues around the campus, to provide and co-create a learning community where becoming and belonging is valued, academic excellence is nurtured, and an ethic of leadership and service, to self and community, is practiced. |

| Academic Skills Specialist (Patrick DeWalt) | I am a former elementary school educator with the Houston Independent School District and currently a graduate student in the School of Education. My research interests include identity, educational experiences of university students, and the African Diaspora. My beliefs are grounded in the power of community and the spirituality that is the result of it. Education has and takes many forms; we as educators and students must learn to better equip ourselves and others to learn the differences. The foundations built within our communities and the spirituality it often fosters must be central to that educational process. | |

I enjoy teaching chemistry at all levels; I often explore the physical world with my children (Luca and Mimi), I have been a high school teacher, a teaching assistant for general chemistry and upper level inorganic courses and a co-seminar instructor for SASC and MASP. My chemical research involved the development of transition metal hydride compounds for use in the renewable energy field, which brought together my interests in chemistry and the environment. One of my life goals is to have chemistry be accessible to any learner, and for students of all ages to feel capable approaching the concepts of chemistry so that they can enjoy the magic and wonder of our world.

Ann Scarritt, McNeill/SASC Math Program Director, McNeill Academic Coordinator![]() |
I am a native of Boulder, but I have lived in Zambia, Uganda, Great Britain, Israel, Connecticut, California and Wyoming at different times of my life. As you can imagine, I love to travel. I also really enjoy working with my hands, mostly through woodworking and gardening. My work-work is also very meaningful to me, I am the McNeill Mathematics Program director. I love talking about teaching, how people learn and about math. I used to be a Civil-Environmental Engineer, so the practical application of mathematics – to both environmental and social issues – is a particular interest of mine. I am also very lucky to live near much of my family. I live with my partner Sam, next door to my parents and one town over from my sister and her partner.
Delsie Khadem-Ghaeini, McNeill/SASC Math Program Assistant Director, McNeill Academic Coordinator![]() |
I love to run, dance, cook, laugh, and spend time with family. I speak fluent Farsi and Spanish and I am Iranian and Latina (Spanish & Native American). I love talking about math, math education, nutrition, exercise, business, marketing, and culture. I have run a marathon, danced on stage, played the violin at Boettcher, climbed a 14-er, started my own business, moved abroad by myself, competed in a triathlon, and sewn most of my halloween costumes. I have taught grades 6 through University mostly in Boulder and for 2 years in Guatemala and love teaching math and working with math teachers and students. I am fun, direct, honest, loyal, goal-oriented, and a risk-taker. I love learning and experiencing what the world has to offer and helping others do the same. My husband Dennis and son Bizhan have taught me that love is infinite and abundant.

She has been teaching with SASC since fall of 2003. In the meantime she has completed her Masters in Math Education here at the University of Colorado as well. After completing each degree she has tried to leave, but the amazing staff and students keep her coming back year after year. Outside of teaching Beth enjoys spending time with her family and her two dogs, Eleanor and Norman. She lives in Westminster, and although may leave that city, has no intention of ever leaving Colorado, the great state she was born and raised in.

When I was a kid, I didn’t play with Barbie dolls. Instead I made a doll house, built the furniture, and wallpapered the rooms. Ever since I can remember I’ve enjoyed creating things, a delight that carries into my teaching – I really pride myself on creating curriculum that matters. Today you can find me sewing clothes, tiling a bathroom, installing wood floors, excavating dirt for a house addition. My most cherished creation is my son, Cedar.

Willis, Julia , McNeill/SASC Writing Program Director , McNeill Academic Coordinator ![]() |
I am SASC’s Writing Coordinator, and I love talking to students about writing and ideas. I often find myself “between” things. I hated having to pick just one major, so I have degrees in Mathematics, Women’s Studies, and Literature. I love film, social justice work, birding, and all things comedy-related. Maybe I have a hard time choosing because I grew up here on the Front Range, where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains, and I expected to live my life between two great forces of nature.

Cat Altman, Writing Instructor and Academic Specialist![]() |
I took a long time to recognize myself as a writer. In college, I declared dramatic arts as my major, but it wasn’t until senior year that I realized I’d taken so many writing classes I could declare English as a double. After college, I fell into publishing for a couple of years, then decided to set out and find my own story. I sold everything I had, bought a backpack, and walked from Georgia to Maine. It took me six months. I came back determined to attend graduate school and write a non-fiction account of one woman’s walk through the woods. My thesis ended up a children’s novel—a magical account of a girl who follows an ancient trail for two thousand miles in search of a fruit with three seeds: one for love, one for wisdom, one for truth. At the end of my grad program, I had told my story but hardly in the traditional way I’d planned. When I finished, I felt I’d lost my community and my sense of exploration. And then I found SASC. I started off teaching one section of first-year research and writing in the basement of Norlin Library. Now I’m a writing instructor, a writing tutor, the IA supervisor, and an editor for sub-scribe magazine. I am also the owner of the most cushy couch and the most powerful space heater in the department. Currently, I’m working on two writing projects: a non-fiction book about my time in Thailand documenting Theravada Buddhist nuns’ fight for ordination rights, and a collection of magical realist short stories. |

Shane Oshetski, Writing Instructor![]() |
Shane teaches 1080 and sometimes 3100 here at SASC. Outside of class, he writes fiction and is working on a collection of stories. Despite his love of creative pursuits like teaching and writing, he finds it difficult to write clever and interesting bios that reflect his skills in these areas.
Jaime Pleitgen, Writing Instructor![]() |
I’ve spent most of my life trying to connect things that don’t belong together (or so I’m told): Barbie’s head on G.I. Joe’s body, short legs with long-distance running, a science degree with a knack for the fine arts, and—my most recent dilemma—a desire to garden with the fact that (despite my best efforts) I’m a horrible morning person. Also, I adore a good jigsaw puzzle, which is why I also love teaching writing—sometimes the pieces don’t fit where you think they should, but you always get a beautiful picture in the end.

¿Qué onda mi raza? Well four years later and I am still here at CU-Boulder. I am excited to be beginning my fifth year at the university, and I don’t think that I will ever be ready to graduate. During the past four years here at CU, I have been lucky and privileged to have experienced all that I have. From taking classes that helped to define my revolutionary consciousness, to creating relationships that I will cherish forever, to spending a year in México I have truly had the time of my life. I have also had the opportunity to be involved with some incredible student organizations on campus such as UMAS y MEChA and the nation’s largest Latino fraternity…the most honorable Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. After being confused for the first three years of my college experience, I finally dropped the English major and declared Ethnic Studies as my primary major…probably the smartest thing I have done here at CU. With a concentration in American Indian Studies and Chicana/o Studies, I have dedicated myself to reclaiming the histories that I have been denied throughout my entire life, giving voices to the ancestors that have been silenced and forgotten, and enacting real revolutionary change so that that this country and world become free and equal. Although I may not be ready to leave, I know that there comes a time when we all must move on to new things in our lives. I look forward to possibly participating in the Teach for America program after I graduate next May, and plan to return to a university campus someday to pursue a career as an Ethnic Studies professor. I am hopeful for what the world has to offer and am passionate about making it a better place. |

James Silva![]() |
Hi, my names is James Silva, and I’m a 22 year old Political Science and English major college student, reputedly intelligent, patient, analytical with varied interests in politics, Modern and Spanish literature, editing, Indie and Punk music and Do-It-Yourself culture. I'd like to meet students with varied interests, curious about the world, comfortable expressing likes and dislikes about writing (I hate struggling to guess), delighting in the ability to fascinate a reader, and in being respected as a student/writer, value argument, research, truth, exploration of thought, justice and intellectual growth. The current scope of my life is surrounded and enriched by writing. I spend much of my time studying, composing Post-Modern short stories, watching Latin American soccer games via the Internet and finishing up my undergraduate education. If you are interested in procuring my advice and aid in your writing endeavors, please see me. Together we can make something that seems dreary and confusing become a powerful tool in enhancing your voice. |
