In response to the possibility of a widespread flu pandemic, commonly referred to as bird flu or avian flu, CU-Boulder has developed the CU-Boulder Pandemic Response Plan to prepare the Boulder campus should an outbreak occur. The plan outlines the structure to prepare for and manage response to a contagious disease outbreak of significant magnitude—including maintaining campus operations—and was approved by the Emergency Operations Management Group (EMOG) on June 21, 2006.

Key elements of the plan include:

  • Monitoring and responding to the effects of a possible pandemic on faculty, staff, students, parents, visitors, and the community
  • Providing broad and inclusive communications to all affected parties
  • Implementing appropriate and adequate preparations
  • Supporting training and exercises
  • Initiating appropriate response actions and recovery processes should a pandemic occur

(For a copy of the plan, e-mail Emergency Management and Planning Coordinator Sylvia Dane at sylvia.dane@colorado.edu.)

Should a pandemic occur, the public health departments at the county and state levels will be responsible for issuing quarantine orders, directing facilities closure, providing critical information, designating key health-care facilities, and distributing anti-viral medications. This authority encompasses all private citizens, businesses, and campus operations, and the Boulder campus will work closely with the Boulder County Public Health Department and will comply with all guidance and recommendations.
