Safety Initiatives Coalition
The Safety Initiatives Coalition is a group of students and staff from both CU and the greater Boulder community who meet once a month to address safety issues and work together to find solutions and opportunities for organizational collaboration.
Mission
The Safety Initiatives Coalition strives to communicate and collaborate with members of the University of Colorado campus, in partnership with the City of Boulder, in order to strengthen our community through increased accessibility to safety education, resources, and practices.
History
In the fall of 2008, a series of attacks occurred in the City Boulder that greatly impacted the University campus community. In an effort to address concerns regarding the safety and security of the campus and students, faculty, and staff who reside in the City of Boulder, the Safety Initiatives Task Force was formed. The first meeting of the Safety Initiatives Task Force (now Coalition) was in November 2008 and the Coalition currently meets every month. Members of the Coalition include various students and staff concerned with or involved in safety efforts on campus and in the Boulder community.
Accomplishments and Current Projects
- Defining Safety Workshop—Members contributed ideas and opinions as to how the university should define safety, and discussed the differences between each other’s definitions.
- Safety Survey (Spring 2009)—Students, faculty, and staff were surveyed to gain insight into perceptions of safety held by members of our campus community.
- Safety Survey Follow-Up (Current)—Based on the results of the safety survey, students and staff members met with groups on campus and encouraged responses to safety concerns.
