Snow Sports

Avalanche Awareness Level 1

Enjoying winter safely in the backcountry involves knowing how to recognize potential avalanche hazards. This course will focus on snowpack structure, snow metamorphism and more importantly, avalanche dynamics, terrain analysis, stability evaluation, route finding, safety and rescue. Day 1 is from 4:30-10:00pm at the Rec Center. Day 2 is optional and in the field from 7:00am-7:00pm. Fee includes equipment, instruction and clinic handouts. Transportation is by carpool.

Avalanche Rescue Clinic

This is one day of safety training you don't want to miss if you plan on riding or traveling in the Colorado backcountry! We will teach you everything you need to know about using avalanche beacons, probing, and working to find those buried in avalanche terrain. Don't be caught in a tough situation without this course under your belt! Previous Avalanche Level 1 course experience recommended. Pre-trip meeting is mandatory. Transportation is by carpool.

Back Country Yurt & Soak Trip

Head to State Forest State Park for an introduction to backcountry travel and yurt trips. Spend 2 nights in a yurt that you snow shoed into and then soak in the Radium Springs hot springs on the way home. Cost covers lodging, the hot springs entry fee, all group equipment, snow shoes and meals while in the Forest.

Snow Shoe Clinic

Spend an hour with the Outdoor Program learning about the basics of snow shoeing. Clinic will cover equipment, environmental concerns, great locations and more!

Telemark/AT Skiing Clinic

Spend an hour with the OP covering the differences between Telemark Skiing and Alpine Touring skiing. Learn about the equipment, local areas that have the equipment and how to get started in both of these activities.
