Aikido is a Japanese martial art and the highest form of non-violent self defense in which the defender joins forces with their attacker to neutralize the attack without injury to either.  It is a collaborative discipline for training mind, body and spirit in a unified whole, creating harmony and justice out of violence.  The training is rigorous yet relaxed, with an emphasis on posture, balance, and spiral movement.

The Japanese art of fencing called Kendo, meaning "the way" (do) "of the sword" (ken), is the oldest form of martial art in Japan. Through it's long history and cultural roots, the art of Kendo expresses itself not just as purely physical power, but as a deep mental training and a philosophical outlook on everyday life. Class meets in Carlson 1B12.

Xingyi Quan

Xingyi Quan: This course will teach you about the ancient Chinese internal martial art system of Xingyi Quan which combines profound principles, theories and martial techniques. You will learn the Five Elements of Xingyi which includes hand and footwork methods, basic forms, applications and theory for health and self-defense. Lesser known in the west than its sister art Tai Chi, Xingyi has an elegant appearance and an intensive basic training system. With practice it can increase mobility, power and focus in all activities.

Brazilian Jijitsu

Brazilian Jijitsu: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the single most effective martial art you can learn for self-defense. Unlike most martial arts, Jiu Jitsu doesn’t rely on size and strength. It’s all about leverage and joint manipulation. A smaller person could easily defeat a much larger and stronger opponent with BJJ. And since 90% of fights end up on the ground, doesn’t knowing a martial art that focuses exclusively on ground combat make sense? Your instructors at CU will be coming from the highly regarded Easton Training Center.

Kick Boxing

KickBoxing: Kickboxing is a variation on the striking art commonly known as Muay Thai. The primary difference in Muay Thai and Kickboxing is that Kickboxing will shift away from some of the more advanced components of the sport of Muay Thai and focus primarily on creating a fluidity and cadence between the fundamentals of Western Boxing and the infamous round-kicks that has helped Muay Thai achieve such high levels of popularity and functionality among people who are simply looking to get into the best shape of their lives, to the elite level athletes who can be seen competing in the UFC. The kickboxing program will put a heavy focus on conditioning as well as cementing the basic principles of the sport in a friendly and safe environment.
