Martial Arts: Course Descriptions

Chen Style Taijiquan
Tai Chi is a traditional martial aret and health exercise that emphasizes deep relaxation of mind and body.  Through the practice of the Tai Chi form, one will experience how profound relaxation leads to optimal action in self-defense and in application to other physical disciplines.  Because it does not rely on brute force, Tai Chi is a rare example of martial art that can be used effectively by both women and men.  Chen style Tai Chi barehand forms (first form) will be taught in this class.  To find out more about the class, go to "nowspace.colorado.edu/taiji/taichi.html".

Enshin Karate
Enshin Karate is considered the ultimate practical style in the martial arts. It is a strategy that enables its practitioner to convert defense into offense. It stresses the development of flexibility, power and speed, with emphasis on stretching, and conditioning practice. Training in Enshin Karate provides the student with a means of expanding spiritual awareness, mental alertness, a sense of confidence, and provides resources for meeting the challenges encountered in life.

Kendo
The Japanese art of fencing called Kendo, meaning "The Way" (do) "of the sword" (ken) is the oldest form of martial art in Japan. Its long cultural history is interwoven in the very fibers of the Japanese people. The art of Kendo is not purely physical power; it is a deep mental training and philosophical outlook on everyday life. Today, Kendo is an exhilarating, competitive sport which helps cultivate both the spirit and the body. A study of the knighthood and bushido (valor, honesty, integrity, and patience) forms the basis for developing a code of ethical rules for a Samurai-Japanese knight. The shinai (Japanese sword) is included in the class fee - it is yours to keep!
(Only previous Kendo students are allowed to register without purchasing the shinai ... you must have a shinai to participate!)
Aikido
Aikido is a japanese martial art which uses joint locks, throws and pins to subdue an attacker. It is non-violent self defense. Through Aikido practice, the body comes to understand the meaning of harmony and non-resistance. The training is rigorous yet relaxed, with an emphasis on posture, balance, and spiral-like movements. Students learn at their own pace in a positive and non-competitive atmoshere.

Shao-lin Kung Fu
Chinese Shao-Lin Kung Fu was developed by the Famous Monks of the Honan Temple and is considered by many to be the origin of most styles of martial arts throughout the Orient. The Monks found this unique method of training not only developed their legendary martial arts skills, but also benefited their health, longevity and mental/spiritual discipline. This class encompasses many colorful and challenging styles of training: Shangtung Black Tiger, White Crane, Preying Mantis, LoHan Fist, and the classical "Monks" staff and "Beggars" stick. Traditional Chi Kung postures and the Tai Chi form, with sticky hand training, will also be taught.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective systems of ground fighting known today. Unlike wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on chokes, arm locks, and other submission holds in order to subdue an opponent. This class will emphasize both offensive and defensive techniques, and will focus on all ranges of unarmed fighting; from stand-up fighting to ground fighting.

Muay Thai Kickboxing
Muay Thai fighters are skilled in the extreme, and fearless within the clash.  The art, renowned for a realistic and heartfelt approach to unarmed combat, has the well-earned reputation as a most dynamic form of stand-up fighting.  Practice of this ancient art from Thailand incorporates stand-up boxing and kickboxing, along with proficient usage of elbows and knees.  Training is rigorous, and students will enjoy the benefits of increased strength, flexibility, and speed of movement.
