SPRING 2010 MARTIAL ARTS

The Instruction Program offers a variety of martial art forms to meet all of your needs. If you've ever thought about learning a martial art for fitness, self-defense, or self-confidence, now is the time to try one of our programs. All of our instructors are professionals of high rank, with many years of practice and experience behind them. Some are even nationally or internationally recognized as experts within their field. Don't be fooled by imitators or wannabes, these people are the real deal!

From Monday, January 11 to Friday, January 15, all Martial Arts classes will be offered free of charge* so that you may try out different classes and instructors during registration. Space availability is on a first come basis. In addition, there will be no classes over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend or during Spring Break. Classes run January 11th through April 30th.

*Note: free class trials "do not" include Women's Self Defense; which is only offered as a six-week course (see below).

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective systems of ground fighting known today; relying on chokes, arm locks, and other submission holds to subdue an opponent. Although primarily ground based, this class will focus on all ranges of unarmed fighting; from stand-up fighting to ground fighting. Note: This class only runs from January 14th through March 18th. Class meets in the Matroom.

Boxing / Kickboxing / Self-Defense

Learn the fundamental skills of boxing, kickboxing, and self-defense in a non-stylized format from a certified instructor with over 20 years of formal training and experience. Additional skills training will include joint locking and control techniques for the stand-up fighter. Participants are asked to bring their own "boxing hand wraps". Class meets in the East General Gym.

Yang Style Taijiquan ("Tai Chi")

Tai Chi is a traditional martial art and health exercise method that emphasizes deep relaxation of mind and body. Because it does not rely on brute force, Tai Chi is a rare example of martial art that can be used by both men and women. Yang style Tai Chi barehand forms will be taught in this class. All class meets in Carlson 1B12.

Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate is one of the oldest forms of traditional Okinawan / Japanese martial arts still in practice today. This class will present traditional forms and techniques that are accessible to all participants. Class meets in Carlson 1B12.

Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that uses joint locks, throws, and pins to subdue an attacker. It is considered the highest form of non-violent self-defense. The training is rigorous yet relaxed, with an emphasis on posture, balance, and spiral-like movement. Students learn at their own pace, in a positive and noncompetitive atmosphere. Class meets in the Matroom.

Enshin Karate

Enshin Karate is considered the ultimate practical style in the martial arts. It encompasses a trademark strategy that enables its practitioners to convert defense into offense, utilizing devastating blocks, kicks and punches. It stresses the development of flexibility, power, and speed; with emphasis on stretching, conditioning, and practice. Class meets in the East General Gym.

Kendo

The Japanese art of fencing called Kendo, meaning "the way" (do) "of the sword" (ken), is the oldest form of martial art in Japan. Through it's long history and cultural roots, the art of Kendo expresses itself not just as purely physical power, but as a deep mental training and a philosophical outlook on everyday life. Today, Kendo is an exhilarating, competitive sport that helps to cultivate both the spirit and the body. We provide all the equipment; and the shinai (Japanese bamboo sword) is yours to keep! Class meets in Carlson 1B12.

Women's Self Defense

This six-week course is taught by instructors who are certified in assault and rape prevention, and offers training in elevated awareness of dangerous situations, practical techniques for verbally diffusing a potential conflict, managing the effects of fear and adrenaline, and simple but effective defensive techniques that include ground fighting and deceptive strategies. The course includes a "graduation class" involving a padded "assailant", which allows students to practice their skills with full action. Class meets in the Matroom.
