Endowed chair named after former president

CU is honoring one of its former presidents with an endowed chair in leadership.

The Quigg and Virginia S. Newton Endowed Chair in Leadership will guide existing campus leadership programs, according to campus administrators.

A search committee is being formed and the chair could be filled as early as September.

Quigg Newton was a former Denver mayor and the eighth president of CU, serving from Dec. 15, 1956, until June 30, 1963. He died in 2003 at the age of 91. He was married to Virginia S. Newton.

The Newton chair will provide "intellectual and scholarly leadership" for the following programs: the Chancellor's Leadership Residential Academic Program, the President's Leadership Class, the Institute of Ethical and Civic Engagement, campuswide programs leading to the Certificate in the Study and Practice of Leaderships, and possibly other programs.

During Newton's tenure as CU president, the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics was established. Also, the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and the Institute of Behavioral Science were launched, the University Medical Center in Denver experienced dynamic growth and the university helped attract the National Center for Atmospheric Research to Boulder.
