Smart Meters FAQ's

Do any of your parking meters accept credit cards?

Yes, we recently installed parking meters in two areas on campus that accept credit and debit cards in addition to coins. We call them smart meters.

Where are the new meters installed?

The smart meters are located in lots 377 (along Colorado Avenue just east of Folsom Field) and 381 (along University Avenue just east of the 17th Street turn-off). Please note that two different parking machines are installed in lot 381—the new meters and a parking pay station. If you park at a meter space, you must pay the parking meter located next to the parking space, and NOT the parking pay station. If you park in a space without a meter, you must pay the parking pay station, and NOT a parking meter.

How are these meters different than other parking machines that accept credit cards?

The new parking meters are located next to your parking space, just like “traditional” parking meters. You will not have to walk across a lot to locate them. Also, your allotted parking time is displayed on the meter head. You will not need to display a receipt as proof of parking purchase.

What will the benefits be to the public?

In addition to providing our customers with additional payment options, we expect the new meters to be in better working order than the older meters.

How do I use the new meters?

If you are paying by credit card, scan your card, add your desired amount of time (up to the maximum), and then select the “OK” button. If you are paying by coins, simply feed the meter the amount of time needed. Each meter also has instructions printed on it.

Can I cancel my transaction?

If you are paying by credit card, you may cancel your transaction after scanning your credit/debit card by selecting the “cancel” button prior to selecting the “ok” button.

Can I print a credit card receipt from the new meters for my records?

No, you cannot. Please view your credit card statement to see your meter charges.

How much does it cost to park at the meters?

The meter rate is $1.50 per hour from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., seven days a week. After 5 p.m. it is free to park in lot 377, while a $3 flat fee is charged in lot 381.

Is there a minimum amount of time that I can park at one of the new meters?

The minimum amount of time that you can purchase to park is for 20 minutes and costs $0.50.

Will there be time limits?

Yes, existing time limits will be enforced. The maximum time in lot 377 is two hours, and the maximum time in lot 381 is four hours.

Can I use my meter debit card?

No, unfortunately these meters do not accept meter debit cards.

What happens with the unused meter time purchased?

There is no refund for unused meter time.

Why doesn’t the parking meter screen light up in the dark?

The parking meter screen does light up in the dark AFTER you have added payment. The meters are solar powered, and a constantly glowing screen would deplete their solar battery.
