This 2009-10 transfer guide is based on degree requirements for CU-BoulderŐs School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Colorado community college students can use this guide to plan their program of study and selection of courses.

Before entering the final semester at a Colorado community college prior to transfer, students should consult with a transfer advisor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at CU-Boulder to plan a course of study.

Standards for Guaranteed Admission
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is required, as well as a 3.0 GPA in all journalism courses attempted. Transfer is NOT guaranteed if the student has deficiencies in the Minimum Academic Preparation Standards. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication requires 30 transferable semester hours, including the following:
- Work toward the College of Arts and Sciences lower-division degree requirements
- JOU 105-3 Introduction to Mass Media (UCB equivalent JOUR 1001-3- Required of all students wishing to transfer directly into School of Journalism and Mass Communication). Equivalent courses at specific community colleges include: JOU 101-3 Introduction to Journalism (Colorado Northwestern Comm. College) MCA 101-3 Introduction to Mass Comm Arts (Lamar Community College)
- JOU 106-3 Fundamentals of Reporting (UCB equivalent JOUR 2601-3 Principles of Journalism- Required of all students wishing to transfer directly into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as BCNS, BCPM, NSED or MDST major). Equivalent course: JOU 102-3 News Writing (at Colorado Northwestern Comm. College)
- JOU 111-3 or MAR 220 Principles of Advertising (UCB equivalent JOUR 2403-3--Required of all students wishing to transfer directly into SJMC as an advertising major. MDST Transfer can choose either JOU 106 or JOU 111.)
If the community/junior college does not offer, or the student does not take, both journalism courses, the student is not eligible for admission to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The student may apply to Arts and Sciences as a prejournalism major and, after completing the requirements, apply for admission to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as an intrauniversity transfer.
Course Work
Students interested in transferring to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication should consult the Arts and Sciences transfer section for courses that will fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences lower-division degree requirements. Only the courses listed will be accepted as journalism/mass communication transfers.
Degree Graduation Requirements
The Bachelor of Science degree requires a total of 120 semester hours with a grade point average of not less than 2.25 overall and 2.50 in journalism and mass communication courses. Of these 120, at least 40 must be upper division credits, 12 of these in an area of concentration, and 28-40 in journalism. The last 30 hours of course work must be in residence in the school.
