Step 2) Application Instructions

For information on department minimum requirements, test scores, deadlines, and to find out what additional materials they require, go to the academic section and select your program.

Application Instructions
Follow these instructions when completing the Graduate Admission Application Part I:

  1. Give your full legal name. This name is used for all of your university records. Include former names under which materials pertinent to this application may be found.
  2. Social Security numbers are used for record keeping and identification of students. Use is protected under federal and state privacy laws.
  3. Attach the nonrefundable $50 application fee to the application before it is submitted. Make the check or money order payable to the University of Colorado. (McNair Scholars see the McNair web site)
  4. Use the major code listed on the Academic Overview for the department to which you are applying. If you are applying for more than one program or for a primary and secondary program, a complete application must be submitted to both departments.
  5. Do not disregard any part of your previous record.
  6. Be sure to sign the application.

Transcripts
Request that two official copies of your transcript(s) from each college or university you have attended be sent directly from the issuing institution to the department to which you are applying. While credits from one institution may appear on the transcript of a second institution, official transcripts must be submitted from each institution, regardless of the length of attendance, and whether or not courses were completed. Official transcripts exhibit the official seal and signature of the registrar. Transcripts that are marked student copy, or unofficial are not accepted as official and cannot be used in the admission decision. Failure to list and submit official transcripts from all institutions will result in processing delays and could result in refusal and/or dismissal. It is recommended that domestic applicants with transcripts from international institutions allow additional time for evaluation and processing of these credentials by submitting the application 4-6 weeks before the posted deadline.

Supplementary Materials
A number of departments require supplemental materials from applicants. If you are submitting supplementary materials to support your application, clearly mark the materials indicating your full legal name and social security number, the department to which you are applying, contents, and purpose for which they are being submitted. In addition, sufficient postage must be included if the materials are to be returned to the applicant.

Test Scores
Scores on specific examinations are required in some instances. Refer to information provided by the department to determine what is required. The institution code for CU-Boulder is 4841 for the GRE and GMAT exams.

Recommendation Forms
Check with your department for the number of recommendation letters required. Complete the necessary information at the top of the recommendation form. Give one form to each person from whom a recommendation is requested. It is important that those recommending you evaluate your competence and potential as a graduate student. Be sure to include the address of the department to which you are applying in Section 1 of the form. Applicants using the interactive application have the option of submitting their recommendation letters electronically or via mail.

Tuition Classification Form
If you will have been domiciled in the state of Colorado for the 12 consecutive months prior to the first day of classes for the term for which you are applying, or if you, your spouse, or your parent are active-duty members of the armed forces on permanent duty stationed in Colorado, and believe you qualify for in-state tuition status, complete the Tuition Classification Form and submit it with your application (the form is included in the online application).  Exceptions to the one-year domicile requirement are explained on the Registrar's web site.

Mailing the Application
Interactive applications are submitted electronically to the department. Supplementary application materials (if applicable) should be mailed to the department to which you are applying. Send all correspondence in reference to your application to that same department. See the Academic Overview of the department to which you are applying for the address.
