Areas of Study and Research

The MA/Literature Option is offered in seven areas of concentration: (1) Medieval Iberian Literature, (2) Golden Age Spanish Literature, (3) Colonial Spanish American Literature, (4) 19th Century Spanish American Literature, (5) 18th-19th Century Peninsular Literature (6) 20th-21st Century Peninsular Literature, (7) 20th-21st Century Spanish American Literature.

The MA/Hispanic Linguistics Option includes: (1) Spanish Phonology, (2) Spanish Morpho-Syntax, (3) History of the Spanish Language, (4) Sociolinguistics, and (5) Applied Linguistics.

The PhD in Peninsular Literature/Spanish-American Literature. PhD in Pre-Modern Hispanic Literatures.

Degrees Offered

MA
The MA/Literature Option and the MA/Hispanic Linguistics Option require 31 hours of graduate course work.

PhD
Residence Requirement. PhD students must complete a minimum of one academic year in residence on the Boulder campus (excluding summer) within the four years immediately preceding the date on which they present themselves for the PhD comprehensive examination.

Language Requirement. Students must demonstrate, as early as possible before taking the PhD Comprehensive Examination, communication knowledge in Portuguese and one other modern language (subject to the approval of the student's PhD Supervisory Committee). English and Spanish are not part of this language requirement. Communication knowledge is defined as the achievement of the current minimal acceptable score of the Graduate School Foreign Language Test or completion of a fourth-semester college-level course with a grade of B or higher. A fourth-semester college level of Latin (with a grade of B or higher) will also fulfill part of this requirement and is highly recommended for the Pre-Modern Hispanic Literatures Option. Successful completion of PORT 2350 with a B or higher will satisfy the language requirement in Portuguese.

Admission

Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission. Applicants must:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
  2. Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
  3. Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
  4. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.

Spanish and Portuguese Admissions Requirements
The department Graduate Committee evaluates all applications. In addition to the Graduate School's criteria for regular degree students, the department requires that entering students:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  2. PhD applicants must hold an MA degree from an accredited college or university or its equivalent.
  3. Have native or near-native proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish.
  4. Writing Sample. All applicants are required to submit a writing sample written Spanish or English (usually 10-15 pages). If written in Spanish, include a one-page abstract written in English, include a one-page abstract written in Spanish. The paper should focus on the applicant's area of concentration and include pertinent bibliography.
  5. Four Letters of Recommendation. Each of these must be accompanied by the Recommendation Form.
  6. Application for Teaching Assistantship. Applicants who wish to receive TA positions in the Department must apply using this form.
  7. Current Curriculum Vitae. This document satisfies the first part of Question 67 on Part 2 of the University of Colorado Application for Graduate Admission.
  8. Statement of Plans for Graduate Study and Professional Career. This brief description of the applicant's plans for graduate study and professional career satisfies the second part of Question 6 on Part 2 of the University of Colorado Application for Graduate Admission.
  9. Have a general knowledge of Spanish and Spanish American literatures.
  10. All international applicants applying to our program whose native language is not English will need to score at least 80 on the Internet-based version (550 on the paper exam or 213 on the computerized exam) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL)in order to be admitted.
  11. Applicants wishing to be considered for the competitive Devaney, CHA, or Chancellor's fellowships are strongly encouraged to take the GRE general test and submit their official scores.
