Economics

Areas of Study and Research

The programs that the department of economics offers focus on a solid core curriculum in economic theory and econometrics. Beyond this, we offer a number of applied fields that students may select as areas of concentration, with special emphasis on international and environmental economics. Students may also specialize in public economics, urban development, labor, industrial organization, and economic history.

Degrees Offered

PhD
Requires 45 semester hours of approved course work. Course work must include: (a) core classes in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and advanced economic theory; (b) four courses taken in the student’s proposed fields of specialization at the 8000 level; (c) two graduate elective courses with at least one of the courses at the 8000 level and at least one of the courses outside the fields of specialization; (d) 6 credit hours in a research colloquium; and (e) 30 credit hours of dissertation credit after admission to candidacy, including the passage of preliminary examinations in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and comprehensive examinations in two fields of specialization. Students must also take an intensive two-week math review

Admission

Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission. Applicants must:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
  2. Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
  3. Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
  4. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 12 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.

Economics Admissions Requirements
Applicants must:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  2. Have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75. Applicants who do not meet the requirements for admission as a regular degree student may be recommended for a provisional admission.
  3. Have completed intermediate micro-and macro-economic theory courses, upper level undergraduate statistics and 6 semester hours of calculus or equivalent.
  4. Submit verbal and quantitative GRE scores.
  5. Submit TOEFL scores if you are an international applicant.
  6. Provide four letters of recommendation.

Minimum Standards for Applicants
Preapplication or pre-evaluation is not required for all applicants. Students must meet the Economics minimum admissions requirements. GRE required with the following average score:
PhD: verbal 500, quantitative 740.

Financial Support Available
Financial support is available to PhD students through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships.
