College of Music

If music is and always will be an important part of your life, you may want to consider enrolling in the College of Music. The curriculum blends intensive music training with a solid liberal arts education to prepare students for careers as performers, composers, scholars, teachers, administrators, and other professionals. The college boasts a ratio of one faculty member for every six students, and all students are automatically considered for merit scholarships based on the results of their audition.

• Three undergraduate degrees are offered in music: the bachelor of music, the bachelor of music education, and the bachelor of arts in music. The major areas of concentration in the bachelor of music program include performance, composition, and the history and literature of music. Areas of concentration for the bachelor of music education include teaching choral, general, or instrumental music at the K-12 level. In addition to a substantial core of studies in music, the bachelor of arts in music allows a wide choice of study in areas outside of music. Students may also elect a certificate in jazz studies or music technology in conjunction with any of these degrees.
  


• The college has several beautiful performance halls, including the 2,000-seat Macky Auditorium, the 500-seat Grusin Music Hall, the 250-seat Music Theatre, and the 120-seat Chamber Hall. A 4,300-square-foot instrumental rehearsal space in the Imig Music building features a 35-foot ceiling and acoustical draping that can be adjusted depending on the size of the ensemble.
  


• Two computer-assisted music laboratories are designed for instruction in music technology and music theory. The class piano laboratory features 13 digital pianos, and the two virtual practice rooms allow players to control acoustical ambiance.
  


• The Music Library, containing over 100,000 volumes, scores, recordings, and periodicals, is considered to be among the nation's most comprehensive.
