CUConnect Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a portal?
A portal is a type of web architecture that brings together information and services, specific to the person using the portal. CUConnect, the CU-Boulder campus portal, offers secure access to the information and services needed by members of the campus community. CUConnect is built upon the uPortal framework developed by JA-SIG (Java in Administration Special Interest Group).

How do I log in?
In order to log in, CUConnect requires an IdentiKey and that cookies be enabled on your browser. For more information on logging in, see Logging into CUConnect.

What should I see after I log in?
When you first log in to CUConnect, you will see the default color scheme and the following tabs:

  • Students: Welcome, Courses, Academics & Research, Financial, Campus Life and My Page. Each of these tabs has a collection of channels (features) automatically provided to every student the first time they log in.
  • Faculty: Welcome, Courses, Academics & Research, Tools & Resources, Campus Life and My Page. Each of these tabs has a collection of channels (features) automatically provided to every faculty member the first time they log in.
  • Staff: Welcome, Academics & Research, Tools & Resources, Campus, My Job Info, WebCal and My Page. Each of these tabs has a collection of channels (features) automatically provided to every staff member the first time they log in.

Feel free to customize the color scheme, and add, move, or remove channels to suit your preferences by using the Making Changes to CUConnect link. Your changes will be saved for the next time you log in.

What is a channel?
A channel is a feature within CUConnect where specific information or a specific service appears. CUConnect channel examples include Announcements, Course Schedule, GPA Calculator, CULearn, Faculty Course Toolkit, Pay Advice, and much more. What are tabs?
Tabs refer to pages within CUConnect. Each page is oriented toward a collection of information and services by category (for example, courses, financial, campus, or job info). Each page contains channels of information or services.

Student Tabs on CUConnect
CUConnect's tabs are organized by subject matter. The tabs include

  Welcome Displays announcement information pertinent to all students and to students within specific schools, colleges, and class levels. Your student profile, the current semester's academic calendar, Campus News, CU Search, and a student poll are also available on the Welcome tab.
  Courses Offers your current schedule (including grades and drill down detail to instructor and book information), course lookup and schedule planner tools, a GPA calculator (based upon your current GPA and current schedule), and your CULearn courses if you are enrolled in any (with automatic login based upon your CUConnect login).
  Academics
& Research
Provides access to Libraries resources, WebFiles, advising information based upon your school/college, the on-line course catalog, clicker registration, and on-line academic forms.
  Financial Bursar billing, Financial Aid, Student Health Plans, links to CU financial sites, as well as a channel with complete Student Employment listings from the Student Employment office are all available on this tab.
  Student Life Campus Events Calendars, news channels, Student Services Links, access to Software Resources, and Ralphie's Guide are a few of the channels available on the Student Life tab.
  My Page My Page starts with the campus WebCam. There is plenty of room on this tab for you to add any other channels you like, such as "Word of the Day," "Daily Business Cartoon" or more news channels.

Faculty/Staff Tabs on CUConnect
CUConnect's tabs are organized by subject matter. The tabs include

  Welcome Displays announcement information pertinent to all members of the campus community as well as to faculty and/or staff. Your profile, the current semester's academic calendar, Campus News, and CU Search are available on the Welcome tab as well as MyCU links to your pay advice, financial reports, and faculty reporting.
  Courses
(faculty only)
Faculty members will see their Faculty Course toolkit on the Courses tab, with a display of your current teaching schedule and corresponding course tools. Course lookup and schedule planner tools, and your CULearn courses if you are teaching any (with automatic login based upon your CUConnect login) are also available on this tab.
  Academics
& Research
Provides access to the Faculty Report of Professional Activities, Libraries resources, the on-line course catalog, and displays links to academic- and research-oriented sites.
  Tools & Resources Computer Based Training, Office Resources and Personnel, Financial and Systems Resources are all available on this tab.
  Campus Life Campus Events Calendars, Campus Services and CU Links, access to Software Resources, the on-line Silver & Gold, Inside CU, and Ralphie's Guide are a few of the channels available on Campus tab.
  My Job Info Your on-line Pay Advice and access to Work-Life-related resources are available on this tab.
  WebCal Your personal online calendar with automatic login based upon your CUConnect login. You may schedule meetings with other calendar users, keep a task list, set up reminders and, of course, keep track of where you need to be when.
  My Page My Page starts with the campus WebCam. There is plenty of room on this tab for you to add any other channels you like, such as "Word of the Day," "Daily Business Cartoon" or more news channels.

How do I add a new channel or resubscribe to a channel I removed?
To subscribe (or resubscribe) to a channel, click on "Make Changes " in the upper right hand portion of the screen.

  • Click "Add Channel" in the yellow bar
  • Select a channel from one of the categories that appear.
  • Next choose
    • "Add to my page" and move the channel where you want it or,
    • "Use it now" to use the channel without customizing CUConnect.

How do I find a channel?
To find a channel, you can either look in the Guide to Channels channel located on the Welcome tab or follow the instructions above to add a new channel.

Why can't I find the courses I teach?
You must have an active faculty appointment or be listed as an instructor of record in the Student Information System (SIS) to see courses you teach in the Faculty Course Toolkit located on the Courses tab. If you do not see your courses, please verify with your department's SIS Scheduling Liaison that you are listed as an instructor for the course(s) you teach. Any updates the SIS Scheduling Liaison makes will take approximately 48 hours to update CUConnect. If after that time you still don't see the classes you teach, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or 303-735-HELP.

Can I upload my CULearn grades to the upgrAde web grading system?

Who may post announcements?
Several departments around campus are authorized to post announcements: the Registrar, Bursar, each school and college, Housing, International Education, Human Resources, Financial Aid, Parking Management, ITS and Web Communications (to name a few). If you would like to have an announcement posted and you do not know an authorized announcer, submit a request via help@colorado.edu. Announcements are limited to University vital information.

Why can't I remove the announcements channel?
The CUConnect announcements channel is used by CU to communicate vital information for various topics and specific groups of people. Because of the vital and targeted nature of these communications, the announcement channel is permanent.

How can I see news of interest to me?
News available within CUConnect is organized by topic such as Health and Wellness, UCSU news, Campus Press, Silver and Gold, Information Technology news and news for specific schools or colleges. To read the news related to a topic of interest to you, either find the news topic in the Campus News channel drop down box or subscribe to that individual news channel. (See "How do I add a new channel") When adding a news channel, choose the "news" channels category to browse through to find news topics of interest. You can add or delete news channels at any time.

Who may post news?
News is published by authorized individuals. Some news channels are specific to a college or school; other news channels are collaborative efforts of a variety of people and departments contributing to a specific topic (such as Health and Wellness, or Career and Internship News).

Does CUConnect use cookies?
Yes, CUConnect does require your computer to accept "cookies."

Why does CUConnect time out after 30 minutes?
If you forget to log out of CUConnect, the portal will automatically time out after 30 minutes of inactivity. This is a security feature that helps prevent others from gaining access to your private information (student records, financial information, your online coursework, etc.), particularly when you are using a public computer. Warning: this automatic timeout is not a substitute for logging out. The only way to absolutely ensure that your information remains secure is to LOG OUT before you leave the computer.

Can other people see my information?
No. Your personal information on CUConnect is protected through your IdentiKey. Only by logging on with your account name and IdentiKey password can your information be accessed. For this reason, it is very important that you do not give your IdentiKey to anyone. No one, including support staff, needs to know your password for any reason Note: As long as you are logged in, your information is exposed. For this reason, it is essential that you logout of CUConnect whenever you leave your computer.

What if I receive an error message?
If you receive a CUConnect portal error message, please copy the message and forward it to the IT Service Center (help@colorado.edu) or call 303-735-HELP. If you see an error message pertaining to a function you are trying to perform within a channel (for example, while trying to register), check the information in that channel to find the appropriate contact person.

Where can I send my comments and suggestions?
We are very interested in your comments and suggestions. Comments and suggestions may be sent to help@colorado.edu. These will be referenced for future portal offerings and enhancements.

Help with CUConnect
Help is offered through the Help icon help found in the upper right of each CUConnect page.

  • Questions about information displayed within each channel should go to the provider of the information (for example, academic information questions should go to the Registrar or your academic advisor; billing questions should go to the Bursar).
  • Questions about technical workings (or errors) in CUConnect, comments, and suggestions should go to the IT Service Center (303-735-HELP, or help@colorado.edu).
