Maintenance of Facility Security

Lighting

Exterior campus lighting is essential in creating a safe campus environment. Motor vehicle parking lots and structures, main pedestrian walkways and bike paths, and most campus building exteriors are lighted all night long. Maintenance, custodial, police, parking, and residence hall personnel advise the Facilities Management Service Desk on a daily basis of any lighting outages that occur. Exterior lighting receives periodic inspections to identify any unreported lighting failures. These failures are assigned a high priority in the high voltage electrical shop and are normally repaired within 24 to 48 hours. The high voltage electrical shop also replaces bulbs on a regular basis. This replacement occurs every two years for 175-watt fixtures and every four years for 400-watt fixtures.

Trees, Vines and Shrubs

Campus ground's keepers trim trees, vines, shrubs, and other vegetation on a regular basis to enhance campus security. Obstructing vegetation is trimmed away from pedestrian walkways, building entrances, windows, and lighting fixtures. Building proctors are encouraged to report any specific concerns regarding vegetation to the Facilities Management Service Desk at (303) 492-5522, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Door and Locks

University officers and security guards regularly patrol the exterior and interior of campus buildings throughout the night and on weekends and holidays. These officers report door lock and security hardware failures to Facilities Management on a daily basis.

Residence hall staff also check all exterior hall doors daily to ensure that they reclose and relatch properly. Hardware failures and malfunctions are given the highest priority, and housing maintenance personnel are on hand from 7:30 am to 11:30 pm daily to make such repairs. Personnel will be called in at other times of day if there is an emergency.

Crime Prevention specialists within the University Police Department also conduct security surveys of campus facilities and recommend types and placements of alarm systems, security measures for key and cash control, and physical modifications that would enhance the security of a particular area or building. University departments wishing to request a facility security survey should contact the University Police Department at (303) 492-8168.
