Access to Campus Facilities

Facility Access

The use of university facilities is limited to faculty, staff, and students of the university except as the use by others may be specifically authorized under such regulations.  Facility use is governed by the Laws of the Regents of the University of Colorado (https://www.cu.edu/regents/Laws/Article14B.htm) and the CU-Boulder Policy on the Use of University Facilities (http://www.colorado.edu/policies/facility_use.html).

Hours of Public Access

University facilities are open for public access during the following designated times:

Official Building Hours (Academic Facilities)

 

Regular Facility Unlock/Lock and Patrol Services

The CSO – Academic Patrol Unit, under the University of Colorado Police Department (UCPD) provides lock/unlock and non-commissioned patrol services for most campus academic and administrative facilities in accordance with the following schedule: 

Regular Hours of Operation (CSO - Academic Patrol Unit)

Weekday Unlock	5am – 7am
Weekday Lock / Evening Patrol	6pm – 11pm
Saturday Unlock / Lock / Patrol	6am – 11pm
Sunday Unlock / Patrol	6am – Noon
Sunday Lock / Patrol	6pm – 11pm
University Holidays	NONE

The CSO – Academic Patrol Unit is responsible for unlocking and locking exterior facility doors in accordance with official building hours (listed above), providing evening / weekend facility patrol, and providing evening/weekend lock-out assistance (i.e. keys locked in office) for authorized individuals.  Except under special arrangement, this unit does not lock or unlock interior or classroom doors.  During normal university business hours, each facility’s designated proctor is responsible for coordinating all interior/classroom unlock/lock and lock-out assistance.

Numerous campus facilities handle their own unlock/lock and patrol needs.  Facilities providing their own access control include: UMC, Student Recreation Center, Norlin Library, Wardenburg Health, ATLAS, Coors Events Center, Folsom Field (except classrooms), Research Park Facilities, and Housing &Dining Facilities.

After Hours Facility Access

Entry into or use of university facilities outside of Official Building Hours (listed above) is restricted to AUTHORIZED INDIVIDUALS ONLY.  Individuals entering or remaining in university facilities without prior authorization are subject to arrest and criminal prosecution.

AUTHORIZED INDIVIDUALS refers to:

• Faculty, staff, students, or other individual with specifically approved after hours BuffOne Card or Key access
• Participants in university approved events or activities (SEE EVENT APPLICATION PROCESS)
• Other individuals or groups specifically approved by the University of Colorado Police Department

Authorized individuals or groups without facility BuffOne Card or Key access must contact the Community Safety Operations (CSO) Program in advance to arrange for after hours access to the facility.  This request may be made by sending an email to ucpd.security@colorado.edu - please include the following information:

• Event date, event time, building, room(s), group name, contact name, contact phone, contact email, description of the event, presence of alcohol (yes or no), food provided (yes or no), admission charged (yes or no), live entertainment (yes or no), expected attendance, and any special requests.

Individuals or groups requesting after hours facility access may be required to contract for facility patrol or lock/unlock services under the following circumstances:

• The event or activity occurs outside of regular hours of operation for the CSO – Academic Patrol Unit.
• The event or activity exposes the facility to risk of theft or property damage
• The event or activity includes alcohol or live entertainment
• The event or activity has a large expected attendance
