Residence Halls

All residence hall doors that lead to living areas are locked 24 hours a day. The lobbies or commons area of residence halls are open from 7:00 am to midnight. During these hours, a resident may enter the hall through the lobby or commons area or use a key to enter the hall through several outside doors.

From 7:00 am to midnight, friends and guests of a resident may enter the lobby or commons areas and use a house phone to contact the resident they are visiting. The resident then admits the guest. Residents should never admit strangers but should refer them to the hall office.

From midnight to 7:00 am, access to all residence halls is restricted and monitored by staff members on duty. During these hours, both residents and nonresidents must show a picture ID to a night clerk to be admitted. Admitted visitors and guests then use the house phone to contact the person they want to visit.

At check-in, residents are provided with two keys, one for their room and one for the outside doors of their hall, as well as a detailed plan of locking procedures for their residence hall. Outside doors to residence halls should never be propped open, and malfunctioning doors should be reported to the hall office. Residents are advised to lock their room whenever they leave and to carry their keys with them at all times.

All residence hall keys remain the property of the University, and duplication of residence hall keys is prohibited. It is against residence hall policy for people to have residence hall keys in their possession that have not been issued to them in their name. Only original University keys are accepted when residents check out of the halls. If a resident loses his or her keys, the lock on the room door is changed at the resident's expense.

Residence hall security is enhanced by two additional procedures. Female residents are not housed in ground floor rooms, and many windows in ground floor rooms are secured with steel bars.

Campus Buildings

As a member of the campus community, you (as well as University guests and visitors) have access to most campus buildings and facilities during regular hours (Monday through Friday) and for scheduled events on Saturdays and Sundays, excluding most holidays. The University Police Department's security section is responsible for locking and unlocking designated University buildings and for security guard patrols of campus grounds and buildings. Residence hall staff lock and maintain security at the residence halls. If you need assistance in gaining entry to a University building or room and no other help is available, you may call the University Police at 492-6666.
