The multifaceted work performed by the staff of the University of Colorado Police Department requires employees from many disciplines. Every staff member of the department must undergo a thorough background investigation; many positions require additional pre-employment and polygraph examinations as well. All classified staff positions are governed by rules and regulations set forth by the State Department of Personnel, and each position will require a series of interviews and some will require written tests.
Classified staff positions within the Police Department include:
- Accounting Technician - requires up to three years of technical accounting experience or education depending upon the level of work. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Handles purchasing and payroll functions.
- Administrative Assistant - requires up to three years general clerical experience and additional skills and abilities depending on the specific assignment and level of work. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Work within various sections of the Department (Patrol, Detectives, Records, Administration) providing clerical and technical support
- Police Communications Intern - requires a high school diploma or GED and a keyboard skills test displaying the ability to type at least 25 words/minute. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Complete training program to be eligible for promotion to Technician.
- Police Communications Technician - requires a high school diploma or GED, a keyboard skills test and one year of experience in police radio/telephone communications equipment operations. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Answer routine and emergency telephone calls; dispatch police radio calls; use local, state and national law enforcement computers; interface with other law enforcement agencies; assist the public; follow internal notification procedures for various emergencies (fire, flood, criminal episodes).
- Police Communications Supervisor - requires a high school diploma or GED, a keyboard skills test and two years of experience in police radio/telephone communications equipment operations. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Supervise Technicians, schedule work assignments, write procedures, evaluate procedures & personnel.
- Police Officer - must be at least 21 years old; requires at least two years of college (law enforcement experience may substitute year for year); a valid Colorado Driver's License with no more than seven points in the last year, no more than 12 points in the last two years, no alcohol related traffic offenses in the last three years and no repeat alcohol offenses; and an applicant must possess a Colorado peace officer certification (or complete certification within one year after date of hire). EXAMPLES OF DUTIES-- Patrol campus & surrounding areas, assist citizens, write summonses, make arrests, testify in court, investigate crimes, coordinate emergency responses (fire, ambulance, hazardous material spills), work special events (athletic contests, road races, parties/dances).
- Police Supervisors/Administrators - requires additional law enforcement experience, training and expertise depending on specific assignments. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Direct or supervise patrol shifts, Community Services Section, Security Section, Detective Division, Patrol Division, Technical Services, Administrative Support Sections.
- Program Assistant - requires up to five years of clerical and administrative experience depending upon specific assignments. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Performs budget, personnel and payroll functions for the department; supervise units responsible for various administrative support functions.
- Security Guard - some positions may require a valid Colorado Driver's License; there are no other special qualifications. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Work security assignments at Norlin Library; lock and unlock academic and administrative buildings.
- Supervising Security Guard - requires two years experience as security guard and other specialized requirements depending on the specific assignment. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES--Supervise guards and schedule shifts; plan, coordinate and supervise Community Service Aide Program and support Community Services Section.
