Friday May 4, I will derive the Planck black-body distribution as well as answer questions on the exam material. Old exams, concept tests with answer keys, and the formula sheet are posted, as are all HW solutions. HW #10 is due TUESDAY, May 1, by 4pm in my campus mailbox. On problem 7.6, in the last part, you can use the equation 7.10 to calculate the dependence of N= <N> on mu. Also Z_int does not depend on mu. Prof. Nagle's lecture notes are posted here! |

The final exam, covering Chapters 5.3-5.6, 6, and 7.1-7.3, will be held the last day of class, May 4th, from 3-5:30pm. HW #10 is due TUESDAY, May 1, by 4pm in my campus mailbox. |

Announcements for Week 7: February 26, 2007
Exam 1 will be on Friday, March 2nd, from 3:00-4:50 pm (we'll use the room from 4-4:50 to allow extra time for the exam.) The test will cover material from Chapter 1: 1.1-1.6, Chapter 2: 2.1-2.6, and lectures on the general binomial distribution and classical phase space calculations. No crib sheets are allowed, but a formula sheet is part of the test (posted under Exam Info). I have also posted some old exams there as well. Concept tests from Chapters 1 and 2 are posted under Concept Tests. We will have a review in class on Monday. Prof. Jim Shepard will lecture on Wednesday and proctor the exam on Friday. As I will be out of town, my office hours on Tuesday and Wednesday are cancelled. I will have extra office hours on Monday 10-11:30 am and 4-5 pm. I will be out of email contact all Tuesday but back in contact from Wednesday morning on. |

Due to some problems this weekend with the reserve books, the HW assignment is posted on the web (use the sidebar link), and is due Tuesday, February 6 by noon, in my campus mailbox. Of course, you can turn it in Monday if you've finished. I have extra office hours Monday, Feb 5, 10am to noon, in addition to my regular hours 1-2 on Tuesday and 11:30 to 1 on Wednesday. |

As discussed in class, there will be no lecture on Monday, January 29 or Wednesay, January 31, but then a "double" lecture on Friday February 2nd and on February 9th. The second HW assignment is posted on the web (use the sidebar link), and is due Monday, February 5 at the beginning of class. This should allow for more time to ask questions, since I'll be away Monday-Thursday of this week. I'll have extra office hours Friday Feb 2, noon to 2pm, and Monday, Feb 5, 10am to noon. |
