Jean-Baptiste Biot and Felix Savart (above) collaborated on developing a force law for magnetic fields. The Biot-Savart Law is the magnetic equivalent of Coulomb's Law. It's still an inverse square law, but is rather more complicated in its vector nature. We'll study the Biot-Savart Law this week.
Week 10 - March 16-20:
- CHECK OUT THESE LINKS for simulations to show vector fields in 2D and 3D and another (emstatic) in 2D.
- MIDTERM EXAM 2 is this week, Tues night march 17, 7:15-9:15pm in the Physics Helproom, Duane G1B90. The exam will cover up to and including the Linear Dielectrics (Griffiths' 4.4). You will have access to your purple sheet and some formulas on the exam cover sheet (posted here). Old exam 2 questions are posted on CULearn. Note in one of the exams, there are questions on magnetic fields because the exam was given later in the semester. Our exam will not include questions on magnetic fields.
- OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK: Monday office hours with Prof. Kinney will be in the tutorial bay, G2B77, from 3-4pm and 5-6pm. Tuesday office hours are in the same location and run from 4-6:00pm. If you cannot come to one of these sessions, send me an email, and I'll try to find another time.
- WRITTEN HOMEWORK: No HW is due this week.
- READING: We are static magnetic fields. Read Griffiths' 5.1 and 5.2.
- TUTORIALS: There is no tutorial this week because of spring break. All past tutorials are posted on the assignments page.
- HW SOLUTIONS: Solutions to HW1 - HW8 are posted on our CULearn page.
- Course home pages from the previous week: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
I welcome your comments on the class and this website.
