Physics 2010 , Fall 2002

Prof. John Taylor

Announcements:

The final exam is graded and your scores have been e-mailed to your CU e-mail address.  The information sent to you includes:  your letter grade for the semester, followed by your scores (all expresed as percentages) for lab, recitation, the three midterms, CAPA, the final exam, and finally your total score for the semester.  The average on the final exam was 65% and the approximate grade breaks on the exam were
D < 47% < C < 65% < B < 83% < A

Your total score for the semester was calculated with  the following formula:

0.125(T1+T2+T3) + 0.275 Final + 0.15 Lab + 0.04 Rec + 0.16 Capa

A total score listed as AF denotes a failure resulting from failure to complete at least 5 experiments.

IMPORTANT WARNING:  To pass the course you must have done at least 5 experiments.  If you have missed any experiments, you should be making them up, and if you have missed 2 or more, you MUST make them up (to at least 5) to avoid an automatic failure.  To make up an experiment you must get the permission of your instructor and then arrange with Jerry Leigh (the lab coordinator in G2B78A, just beyond the Help Room) to get the equipment.  DEADLINE TO COMPLETE ANY MISSED EXPERIMENTS IS FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER AT 5 PM.

You need to be registered for one of the lecture sections (100 or 200) and for a corresponding lab section.  (The first digit of your lab section should be the same as that of your lecture.)

Lectures and labs begin on Monday 26 August.  The lectures will be in Duane G1B30, Section 100 at 10am and Section 200 at 12 noon.  The first lab on Monday will be Section 240 at 10 am, then Section 120 at 12 noon, and so on.  All labs meet in Duane G2B90.

The first homework assignment is due on Friday 30 August, but this particular assignment is mainly to give you practice at using the CAPA homework system and will not count toward  your final grade.

CAPA set 2 is now available in the usual place.  It is due next Friday 6 September. Detailed solution is Problem 2, due on Friday 6 September as directed by your TA's (problably their mail box, by 5 pm).

CAPA set 3 will be available on Friday 6 September.  Detailed solution of  Problem 5 please.

Week 3: Sep 9 - 13: Mondays sections will do Experiment #1.  All other sections have recitation.  Quiz for recitation sections is Giancoli, page 71, Problem 8 (probably modified a bit). Students in Monday sections may attend any other recitation if they wish.

First Exam is on Tuesday 17 September at 7:30 - 9:00 pm.  PLEASE CHECK YOUR ROOM AND SEAT ASSIGNMENT.    YOU MUST BRING YOUR STUDENT ID TO THE EXAM. You may bring a 3 x 5 card covered (both sides) with useful information, but this must be handwritten by you yourself.

CAPA set 4 is available in the usual place and is due on Friday 20 September.  Detailed solution of  Problem 9 please.

Week 4: Sep 16 - 20: All sections do Experiment 2, so there is no quiz.

CAPA set 5 is available in the usual place and is due on Friday 27 September.  Detailed solution of Problem 5, please.

Week 5: Sep 23 - 27:  Recitation.  Quiz = Giancoli, page 107, problem 34 (or a variant of it).

Scores on the first test have been e-mailed once again (on Monday afternoon) to your CU e-mail addresses.  The average score was  34/50.  The VERY APPROXIMATE grade boundaries are
    A > 43 > B > 34 > C > 25 > D

CAPA set 6 is available in the usual place and is due on Friday 4 October.  Detailed solutions of Problems 2,3, and 4, please.

Week 6: Sep 30 - Oct 4:  Recitation.  Quiz = Giancoli, page 142, problem 42 (or a variant of it).

CAPA set 7 will be available on Friday 4 Oct and is due on Friday 11 October. No detailed solution for CAPA 7, in honor of the fall break.

Week 7: Oct 7 - 9. (No classes on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 -- Fall break)  Do Experiment #3, no official quiz or detailed solution this week.  (Thursday and Friday sections do experiment #3 next week, and attend any other recitation if you want.)

CAPA set 8 is available and is due on MONDAY 21 OCTOBER at 10 am.  (Note the extended deadline in response to the Fall Break.)  Detailed solution for Problem 3, please, due at the usual time on Friday 18 October.

Week 8: Oct 14-18.  Recitation Mon - Wed.  Thursday and Friday sections do experiment 3. No official quiz this week in honor of the exam.

CAPA set 9 is available and DUE ON MONDAY 28 Oct at 10 am.  Detailed solution of Problem 8, please, due on Friday 25 October.

Week 9:  21-25 October.  Recitation.  Quiz: Giancoli, page 206, problem 48 or a variant thereof.  (Hints:  You need to relate the masses of the cubes.  If the first cube has mass m1, then you should be able to show that the second one has mass 8 m1, and so on.  Then you need to find the positions x1, x2, x3 of the CM's of the three cubes along the x axis.  Finally, use a formula similar to (7-9a) to find the position of the overall CM.  The answer is 3.83 lo from the left edge of the smallest cube.)

The second test is now graded and your scores have been e-mailed to you.  The e-mail lists three scores: the first test, the second test and the cumulative score (T1 + T2) ALL GIVEN AS PERCENTAGES.   The average on the second test was 67%.  The very rough grade breaks, based on your cumulative score are
        D < 52% < C < 67% < B < 82% < A
You will be getting your written exams back next week (week 9, Oct 21-25) in recitation.  The deadline for appeals is Monday 28 Oct at 2 pm.

The third test is on Tuesday 12 November.  Same time, format, and seats as for the previous two tests.  I have posted a specimen test and urge you to take a look at it.  You make make a third crib card and bring all three along to the test. The test covers Section 7-8 through 11-4, or, equivalently, CAPAs 8 through 11.

Week 12:  11 - 15  November.  Do Experiment #5.  No official quiz. Test on Tuesday.   Be warned!  The instructions for Experiment #5 are very different. You need to think about this one,  and if you don't think about Archimedes, you're on the wrong track.

The third test is now graded and your scores have been e-mailed to you.  The e-mail lists four scores: the first test, the second test, the third test, and the cumulative score (T1 + T2 + T3) ALL GIVEN AS PERCENTAGES.   The average on the third test was 52%.  The very rough grade breaks, based on your CUMULATIVE SCORE (the last entry) are
        D < 49% < C < 63% < B <77% < A
You will be getting your written exams back next week (week 13, Nov 18-22) in recitation.  The deadline for appeals is Monday 25 November at 2 pm. (For the record, the curve for the third test by itself was D<35%<C<52%<B<69%<A.)

The final exam is on Tuesday 17 December at 4:30 - 7:00 pm in the Coors events center.  You may  bring along 4 crib cards (the usual 3 x 5 variety).  There are two specimen exams posted on the website.  Please look these over.

Seating assignments for the final exam are now posted.  Please be sure to find your aassigned seat in the Coors Events Center.  People needing special arrangements of the final (for example, an early exam) should by now have made arrangements with me, but they MUST CONFIRM with me by Wednesday 11 December at 2 pm.

My office hours have changed!  All are now in my office F-1035 in the Gamow Tower, M 1330-1430,  W 1430-1530, F 1100-1150.  In addition I'm always available after lecture, and I'd be happy to make an appointment with anyone who can't make my regular hours.
