doing work
on a football

Physics 1110, General Physics 1

Instructor: Steven Pollock

In physics, the word "work" has to do with a force acting on an object over some distance. You can also think of work as a transfer of energy to (or from) an object by means of a force moving it. Here, a football place-kicker is doing an impressive amount of work on a football, the result being an increase in the football's speed (and hence, kinetic energy).

The football here is perfectly normal, it is not "underinflated". This amount of compression is what happens in a good solid kick! This picture is a high speed flash, taken using the techniques developed by Harold "Doc" Edgerton . Can you think of tricks that might enable the flash to come on at just the right time to get an image like this? Here are some more very cool high speed images . (On that note - if you have a fast internet connection, there are some even more amazing high speed movies here.)

Week 7 Highlights: Work and Kinetic energy
