supersonic
car Linear velocity or acceleration: which is being demonstrated in the photo? This is Thrust SSC , a British car that set the world's land speed record in Nevada in 1997: 763 mi/hr. (That's 341 m/s, 2% faster than the local speed of sound) Look carefully, you can see evidence of the "supersonic shock wave" refracting light above the car.

"... by the time it was level with the spectator area it was already braking, trailing the brake-chute behind it. But we still hadn't heard a thing - just silence. Then it came, first the sound of the engines then BOOM, BOOM - two huge sonic booms which seconds later echoed off the surrounding mountains... The booms upset pictures on the wall of the saloon in Gerlach, ten miles away but I suspect they were already crooked! "

Week 2 Highlights: Kinematics - one dimensional motion, gravity, and vectors.

NEW RECITATION SECTIONS are available (at 8 AM and 11 AM). They're not crowded (better chance for individual attention!) Anyone is free to transfer into either one, but you must see Valerie in the physics office.

This week, we're in Ch 2 and 3 of HRW, or, Thinkwell section 2 (2-D motion) and 1.3 (vectors).

Homework, reading assignments, lecture notes, in class concept tests (plus many more questions for practice) can all be found in the top links on the upper left. Please check those out!
