Physics 1110,
General Physics 1
Surely one of the greatest triumphs of our understanding of the
physical world -
sending humans to the moon in the
Apollo program of the late '60's and early
'70's. A feat that would have been impossible without understanding
gravity, Newton's laws, energy and momentum conservation, angular
momentum, waves, the fundamental forces of nature.... (not to mention
mastering engineering of all sorts, computer guidance, materials
science, physiology, chemistry, etc!) Although we as a species have
surely accomplished other feats more impressive (at some technical
levels) landing on the moon perhaps had a symbolic value unequaled
before or since. I hope we go back! (One of my favorite pictures from
that era:
earthrise
as seen from the moon, from the National
Air
and Space Museum's web page.)
Week 15 Highlights:
Waves, Sound... and moving on to Gravity
This week, we're in Ch 17 of HRW, Chapter 11 of Thinkwell on
Waves, moving to Ch. 14 (Chapter 7 of Thinkwell) which will finish us up for the semester.
Special notes:
- Particip #10 is now on line.
- I will have one last informal review session (basically, just an extra
evening office hour!) Thurs Dec 11, 6 PM , in Duane G1B20. (That's the
other big lecture halls, I believe!)
- Here are some useful avi files showing some wave interference phenomena.
- Final exam is Monday, Dec 15, 10:30-1 PM. See exams and grading link
for more info
- If you are interested in applying to be an LA (learning assistant)
for my Phys 1110 class next semester, please see me! You can *also*
apply online by going to the STEM-TP web page , you'll see the application
second from the bottom on the left. But my form has one or two EXTRA
questions related to physics only, so I'd like you to also get the
printed form from me. (If you want to do the online one, save your
replies in a file, so you don't have to retype everything!)
