“Better Chemistry Through Dipoles”

Abstract: Don't let the title fool you. This talk is about the physics of interactions and collisions between molecules in ultracold gases. If the molecules possess a permanent electric dipole moment and are moving very slowly, then their behavior upon colliding can be manipulated to a surprising degree. I will explain how this control emerges from the combined effect of the electrostatic forces between the molecules and that of an applied electric field, aided by a little quantum mechanics. As an important potential application, I will also discuss the ability to make the molecules initiate a chemical reaction "on demand."
