PhD Coursework

  • 30 course work hours required with a "B-" or better in each course:
    27 hours—Physics 5000+
    3 hours—Suitable grad-level course(s) (You may take a Physics graduate course to satisfy the requirement).
  • 30 hours of dissertation credit.
    1 dissertation hour = full time for pre-comps students.
    5 hours of dissertation or course work = full time for post-comps students.
    10 dissertation hour/semester limit.
    No more than 10 dissertation hours taken before Comps III can count toward the 30.
        (The semester comps III is taken does not count against the 10-hour limit.)
  • Full time status requirements:
    Pre-comps—5 credit hours or 1+ hours of doctoral dissertation.
    Post-comps—5 credit hours.
  • Successful completion of five of the six courses below ("B-" or better) will fulfill Comps I:
    Quantum Mechanics (Physics 5250-5260)
    Electromagnetic Theory (Physics 7310-7320)
    Statistical Mechanics (Physics 7230)
    and Theoretical Mechanics (Physics 5210).
