Plan I—Masters with Thesis Effective
Spring 2000
The minimum requirement for the master's degree is 30 credit hours. At
least 24 hours must be completed at the 5000 level or above; this may
include a minimum of 4, but not more than 6 thesis hours. A maximum of
6 credit hours may be completed at the 3000 or 4000 level as approved
by the physics graduate committee.
Sample Masters Curriculum with
thesis option
Requirements: Complete required courses listed below
with a grade of “C” or better in each class;
Maintain a “B” average GPA 3.0 (there are restrictions on
the use of thesis hours to raise a low grade point average).
- Five Core Courses to be selected from the following:
Introduction to Research in Modern Physics (PHYS 5430)
Quantum Mechanics 1 & 2 (PHYS 5250, 5260)
Electromagnetic Theory 1 & 2 (PHYS 7310, 7320)
Theoretical Mechanics (PHYS 5210)
Statistical Mechanics (PHYS 7230)
- Select three additional graduate courses (two in
physics, one outside of physics.
NOTE: permission for an additional course outside of physics can be
granted in special cases).
- Select a thesis advisor to work with. Write a thesis
on an original research project, either theoretical or experimental,
for 6 credit hours. Length of thesis should be determined in consultation
with the thesis advisor, and would normally be 30 pages or longer. Present
a talk to a 3-member faculty committee.
