Theoretical Advanced Study Institute in Elementary Particle Physics (TASI)
University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado
General Information
TASI
TASI has been held each summer since 1984. In past years it was held at Michigan, Yale, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Brown, and since 1989 at Boulder. Each year typically some fifty of the most promising advanced theory graduate students in the United States, along with a few beginning postdoctoral fellows and experimental graduate students, have attended TASI. TASI-2010 will be held from June 1 (Tuesday) through June 25 (Friday), 2010, at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado. The emphasis has shifted from year to year, but typically there have been courses of lectures in phenomenology, field theory, string theory, mathematical physics, and particle-astrophysics interface, as well as seminars on other theoretical and experimental topics. It has been highly successful, especially in introducing the students to a much broader range of ideas than they normally experience in their home institutions while working on their (often narrow) dissertation topics.
The main themes of the previous three TASIs were “String Universe,” “The Dawn of the LHC Era,” and "Physics of the Large and the Small." The theme of TASI-2010 will be “String Theory and its Applications: From meV to the Planck Scale”
TASI has limited funds to support participants. In past years, most of the participants were given full/partial support to take care of the cost of meals and accommodation at one of the residence halls on campus. But because of the funding cuts this year, TASI may not be able to offer support at the same level as in previous years; it is unlikely there will be any funds to support travel. We urge home institutions to support their students to the maximum extent possible.
Boulder
Boulder is forty miles from Denver International Airport in Denver. The beautiful campus, at a height of 5400 feet, is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The weather during June is usually very pleasant, with a temperature range of 55°F to 85°F, low humidity, and regular short afternoon thunderstorms. (A sweater is a necessity; an umbrella would help.)
There are innumerable opportunities for outdoor recreation. (Hiking in the mountains requires a good pair of hiking shoes and warm clothing, as there could be snow on the hiking trails.) There are also many cultural activities in Boulder and more in Denver.
Housing and Meals
Students will be housed in one of the residence halls on campus, two people per room. (There are a few single rooms.) Each room is equipped with two single beds. With arrival on May 31 (Monday) and departure on June 26 (Saturday), all weekday meals and Saturday breakfasts will be provided. The cost of lodging and board for this period will be approximately $1600 per person.
