The JILA Physics Frontier Center Partnerships for Informal Science Education in the Community (PISEC) Program provides opportunities for university students (undergraduates, graduate students, and post docs) to teach inquiry-based science activities to K-12 populations that are underrepresented in science, including girls, Hispanic and African American students, and economically disadvantaged youth. PhotoThe assessment component of PISEC includes research on effects of the program on the children and also the university students through a partnership with the Physics Education Research group, PER@C. PER has been gaining momentum in recent years, including increased funding and a Physical Review journal line. At PISEC, we conduct cutting edge research on after school science outreach programs, which have not been well studied. Assessments from our pilot program have been very promising. Read more
