Since the end of the Cold War, profound changes have begun to occur in US government funding of science. Science and Public Policy is a critical thinking course offered at the University of Colorado, in which twentieth century trends in public support of science are traced from the beginning of the century to the present. The influence of world politics and war on the funding of US science emerges as a dominant theme. Particular topics studied include the development of atomic energy for military and peaceful uses, the moon race, the US space program and its impact, the rise of environmental sciences, the development of the Internet, and the demise of the superconducting supercollider.
Most of these themes are covered in our two principal textbooks, "The Physicists," by Daniel Kevles (Harvard Univ Press, 1995) and "Mapping the Next Millenium," by Stephen Hall (Vintage Books, 1993)
This Website includes Internet "Bookmarks" and images supporting these textbooks as well as a student essay summarizing the dominant themes in science and public policy over this century.
