What will the exams be like?

The midterm and final exams will have two parts.  In the first part, you will write short answers to a number of specific questions about the arguments, concepts, and issues we have covered prior to the exam.  In the second part you will write an essay on one of several possible topics.  There will some choice in both parts.

To prepare for the exams, you need two things: the course syllabus and a good set of lecture notes.  Under each heading in the syllabus, ask yourself, "What were the most important points covered in the lecture on this?"  Your notes should give you the answer.

The exams are not primarily a test of your memory.  What we are mainly interested in is how well you understand key concepts and arguments.  I expect you to do very well indeed, but I do not want to make it too easy by giving away the questions in advance!

You should bring blue books (examination booklets) to all the exams.  You can purchase these at the book store.

Note: The final will be cumulative, but the emphasis will be on material covered after the midterm.
