Part II.  Essay.  Write an essay on one of the following topics.  (forty points)

 

  1. How does Locke go about distinguishing between “same person,” “same spiritual substance,” and “same man?”  How successful is Locke’s argument?  How plausible is his account of personal identity?

  2. Leibniz tries to establish that there is a necessarily existent – and maximally perfect – being on which the entire world of contingent beings depends for its existence.  State, explain, and critically evaluate his arguments for these conclusions.
