Michael E. Zimmerman published three essays about the philosophical presuppositions at work in the nuclear arms race.  His book, Heidegger's Confrontation with Modernity  (1990), explores how a major thinker interpreted World Wars I and II as indicating that Western civilization is in the grip of what Ernst Jünger called the Gestalt of the worker/soldier.
