History

In 1968, following a panel discussion on Paul Tillich by members of the University of Colorado Philosophy faculty, students who desired regular opportunities to discuss theological and philosophical issues confronted Professor Ed. Miller. He responded by initiating a series of presentations and panels devoted to these themes. He called this enterprise the Theology Forum. Originally featuring faculty and local personalities, the Forum grew within a few years to include speakers of national and international repute.

In 1975 the Theology Forum introduced a seminar in order to involve the students more directly in the theological discussion. This course became a regular part of the schedule at the University. Student interest has remained steady over the years.

Today the Forum is a part of the Philosophy Department at the University of Colorado. It has been an important part of the CU community for over 30 years. It enjoys the participation of students, faculty, and members of the Boulder community, as well as scholars from around the globe.

The Theology Forum Lecture Series hosts presentations on a variety of topics: Biblical, historical, ethical, philosophical, etc. Among those who have addressed the Forum are Bo Reicke, Wolfhart Pannenberg, John Hick, Alvin Plantinga, Antony Flew, Roland Bainton, William Alston, Howard Hong, William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, Eleonore Stump, and others.

The Theology Forum Seminar is a discussion and study group for students of the university. Each semester the seminar centers on a particular issue, person, or work of theological, philosophical, or religious significance. Topics have included faith, miracles, John Calvin, liberation theology, bioethics,
religious pluralism, Kierkegaard, the Gospel of John, origins of the cosmos, Blaise Pascal, etc.

The Forum has also sponsored conferences on philosophical and theological themes. In particular, the Society of Christian Philosophers and the American Academy of Religion have held regional conferences on the Boulder campus, hosted by the Forum.
