The University of Colorado Theology Forum Presents

"Divine Control: The Molinist and Compatibilist Accounts"

Professor Edwin Chong
Colorado State University

When: Wednesday, April 20 at 3pm
Where: Ketchum 235

In this talk, I explore two distinct accounts of divine control: Molinism and (one form of) compatibilism.  I argue that the sets of feasible worlds open to God in both cases are essentially identical. This brings into question some traditional motivations for embracing either compatibilism over Molinism, or vice versa.  Specifically, this means that: (1) compatibilism accords God no greater control over his creation than does Molinism; and (2) the free-will defense of Molinism is equally applicable to the compatibilist scheme.
