The University of Colorado Theology Forum Presents
“Some Failed Responses to the Fine Tuning Argument"

Professor Michael Huemer

When: Tuesday, February 15 at 7:30pm
Where:  UMC 247

The Fine Tuning Argument claims that the laws of nature are fine-tuned for life, in the sense that, if they had been just slightly different, life would have been impossible; and that this is evidence that the laws were designed to allow life. All of the common responses to this argument appear to fail utterly. I will discuss six of these responses, including (i) the objection that we should not be surprised that the universe is fine-tuned to allow for life, since otherwise we would not be here to talk about it; (ii) the theory that there may be multiple universes with different laws of nature; and (iii) the objection that we cannot assign probabilities to the laws of nature.
