With no intent to take away from Brian Hack's post overall, I do want to
point out that 'Working Toward Sustainable Development' may be at the
root of the problem.

While I realize that 'sustainable development' is the current accepted
terminology, does it appear to anyone else that 'sustainable development'
is an oxymoron? If resouces are finite then isn't continual growth and
development an impossibility? By locking ourselves into this 'box'
labeled 'development' it seems that we may also be limiting our vision to
yesterday's paradigm -- a paradigm that no longers works.

Perhaps if we reconceptualized our thinking around 'sustainable living'
instead of development then a whole lot of the pieces of the puzzle might
fall more easily into place and allow us to see more clearly where it is
we must go and what actions are therefore most appropriate to take.
