John Wish

John Wish is currently a Visiting Professor of Economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He came to Portland in 1988 as a trailing spouse for his wife's new job at US Bank. (She had previously moved more than 20 times for him.) John has owned his own consulting firm, been with a food processor, a major bank, and had tenure at other Universities.

John has traveled widely and has been involved in Economic Development for more than 30 years. A ten day trip to Haiti in 1994, was an epiphany for him. He fears that places like Haiti and Rwanda are perhaps "the miner's canary" of what the 21st century could become in much of the world.

Realizing the inadequacies of much of the literature of development, he began reading much more widely and became aware of Herman Daly in 1995. Daly has provided a new foundation for his thoughts about development.

Currently he is conducting research on the conduct, structure and performance of portions of Oregon Prison Industries where, by law, all prisoners are required to work and prison industries are tasked with making a profit.

The second Saturday of most months, a potluck and discussion group meets from 5 to 8 pm at his house discussing current books. Fritjof Capra's "The Web of Life" will be the topic of discussion in March and April.

Everyone is welcome.
