Three Hyperinflations in the Southern Cone

The chart below shows three neighboring countries in South America's southern cone who all experienced hyperinflation at similar times. Bolivia, the poorest country in South America, had the worst inflation which is measure on the right hand axis and peaked at 12,000%/year. Note that they all started having the problem around the mid 'eighties and their common problem was difficulty in servicing their external debt. Data for this chart came from the WEO (World Economic Outlook) of the IMF.
