Labor vs the IMF Demand for Lower Wages
On July 9, 2000 either 85% or 55%
(depending on whether you believe labor or government) of organized labor
engaged in a
general strike or "stoppage" in protest of the lowering of
salaries of public workers (with wages higher than $1000/month) 12% to 15% in
order to help pay foreign debt. Not only was garbage collection stopped (as it had been
in May 2000 as shown below)
but bank employees began spreading uncollected garbage on streets -- a scene
that was given considerable TV coverage.
