Anyone concerned with the environmental issue should be familiar with the above Meadows graph. It was published in the book:
Beyond the Limits
By Donella Meadows, Dennis L. Meadows and Jørgen Randers
Chelsea Green Publishing - 1992
The graph is one of the scenarios (not predictions) shown in the Book. It is based on computer modelling, including a great number of variables and interrelations between them. As can be seen, it shows a collaps only a few decades from now.
In the book Factor Four two similar graphs are shown, based on the same computer modelling but with the added assumption of an increase in resource productivity of 3 respectively 5% p.a. These scenarios show a less frightening development. But they both still indicate a development which is not sustainable, although the 5%-scenario is coming close to it.
Since a more rapid increase in resource productivity is difficult to beleive in, the only hope is really, that some of the assumptions in the model give too pessimistic scenarios.
