Moderating Criteria

The criteria stated below are subject to change during a seminar as moderators acquire more experience with a during the seminar. If you have suggestions about the moderating criteria, please write to SE-Admin@csf.colorado.edu

Minimal Moderating Requirements:

For messages to be accepted for the archives they must

  1. be relevant to the topic/book/article(s) being discussed
  2. not be encoded -- materials should be included as straight text.
the exception is graphics which can be attached.
  3. must not be cross-posts, announcements or advertising
  4. must be civil and respectful of others
  5. not violate copyright law. Please send URLs not original articles.

Important considerations for submissions to be approved for posting on seminar include:

  1. RESPECT FOR THE SIZE OF THE SEMINAR
Messages that are intended for, or which are of interest to, just a few individuals, should be sent directly to those individuals. While humor is laudable, submitters must recognize that the seminar is not for mere chat -- there are a large number of people online. The larger the number of subscribers who are likely to appreciate a message, the greater its value for the seminar.
  2. EVIDENCE vs BELIEFS:
Messages need to do more than just reflect the belief of the submitter. They need to be accompanied by thoughtful reasoning or some form of evidence. Appeal to authority is a poor form of evidence, but this does not rule out quotations. References and URLs are encouraged.
  3. MESSAGE LENGTH and QUOTING:
When long quotes are submitted, they can often be placed at the bottom rather than at the top of the message. Selective quoting and succinctness are encouraged.
  4. FREQUENCY of POSTINGS:
Some attention is given to posting frequency. Submissions are encouraged from those who have posted infrequently.
