Aart Roukens de Lange

Aart was born in Holland in 1940 and came to South Africa in 1952. He
studied chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town. He worked in
the chemical industry for 5 years before returning to do his PhD and
lecture in chemical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand
(Wits) (1968-1975). From 1977 to 1982 he worked as a research fellow in
the Applied Maths Department at Wits where he concentrated on the
mathematical modelling of socio-economic systems, always with a focus on
(un)sustainable and perverse trends.
In 1983 Aart moved to the Institute for Futures Research at the University
of Stellenbosch where he specialised in socio-economic structure studies.
In 1993 he retired from active participation in the academic world and is
now a free lance human development consultant. Some of his relevant
