Alcohol and Drug Use Among CU-Boulder Undergraduates Spring 1997
Comparison of Undergraduates, Greeks, and Graduate Students

1. Greeks:

  • 79% of Greeks binge, as compared to 58% for the general undergraduate population; over half (54%) of Greeks binged 3 or more times in the past two weeks, as compared to 33% for the general undergraduate population.
  • Over half (52%) of Greeks usually binge when they drink; 81% drink to get drunk.
  • 41% of Greeks smoked cigarettes in the past month.
  • 53% of Greeks binged in high school and college.
  • Greeks are much more likely than the general undergraduate population or graduate students to experience negative effects from their drinking; 30% report having been hurt or injured due to their drinking.
  • Greeks are much more likely to suffer second hand effects due to other students' drinking. Nearly one-quarter have been pushed, hit, or assaulted or had their property damaged due to another students' drinking.
  • 44% of Greeks say they have experienced an unwanted sexual advance (53% of Greek women).

2. Graduate students:

  • 29% of graduate students binge; only 6% binged 3 or more times in the past two weeks.
  • Only 4% of graduate students usually binge when they drink.
  • 18% of graduate students smoked cigarettes in the past month.
