If a major program has 10 or fewer students, then the four-character major code is represented as XXXX to protect the respondent's anonymity. For a translation of the letter codes that represent the themes under which each comment was coded (e.g. +EO=positive general academic experience, see the document: "Most Significant Learning Experience and What Tell Others about CU-Boulder: Codes and Themes." For a translation of the four-character SIS major codes see the Major Translation Table--last retrieved from Information Resource Management's web page on March 23, 2000. ACADEMICS (eg, GENERAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE) --Arts and Sciences +E0 -S2 BAAH 0093 The first two years were great, but after then I had moved on. This place is tiring w/all of the babysitting that goes on. Rich brats not showering, selling drugs, panhandling & driving land cruisers. CU gave me so much, but I'm done, for now. +E0 +S2 BAAH 0181 That it broadened my education and let me work w/wonderful people who would later be great resources. +F0 -F0 -Z0 E9 BASA 0342 I have had good professors, bad ones, and ones that have been easy graders, but hard to understand. I tell them that this university is hard work, confusing, and huge. It's easy to get lost in the process here and that is frustrating. +E4 +E2 BCHM 0924 1) The honors program is amazing - teaching is top notch, and the opportunity there for cross-disciplinary exploration is amazing. Overall, this is the best program I have interacted with at CU. 2) I spent way too much time doing independent study and an honors thesis, and I don't know if I'll ever do anything in Bio-Chemistry as a result. it was very draining, and subsumed many of my other interests (clubs, cross-country/track, cultural exploration, socializing, etc.). +N0 E9 BCHM 1063 Although CU provides a wealth of opportunities both academically and extracurricularly - it lacks a sense of community. The individual students don't feel a true sense of belonging & get easily distracted from school work because there isn't a bond between faculty & students, or even the student body as a whole. Therefore, you really have to motivate yourself & find others who are more interested in school then socializing...otherwise it's too easy to get lost & loose focus. +E0 -M0 BFAS 0793 That it's a good general education, but not strong in art department. i.e. building old & dirty, classes not huge selection & general sense of fatigue in some of teachers in dept. -L2 +E0 -T CHIN 1049 My freshmen year (1994-1995) I bragged all the time about CU. I still think the school is good & my educational experiences was great. The downfall has become the city of Boulder & the feelings of insecurity. Also the expense is ridiculous considering how much it is just to attend CU. Also, the financial aid office needs major help!!! +E0 -U COMM 0223 I tell other people that it is a beautiful school with a great learning environment. I feel like I have a wide based knowledge in a variety of subjects. I think that some of the requirements are ridiculous. (some of the core areas) That is my only reservation about the school. Overall, I would recommend the university. +P -E7 -T -U COMM 0878 I learned the most just being away from home and growing up. There are many things that weren't taught to me - like practical issues such as current events in the U.S. and worldwide & important historical events. The tuition, books, living expenses were too expensive compared to most other universities. There were too many CORE classes required especially sciences. +E0 -L2 COMM 1509 That the education in Boulder is good, but that the town and the people are boring. I also tell them that Boulder is becoming a police ruled fascist town when all attempts to have fun are in vain. +P +E0 ECON 0188 It took me a long time to appreciate it, but I am glad I came here, I grew up a lot, and I learned a ton. It's been good, but it wasn't an easy four years. +H6 -Z0 +E0 ECON 0420 I found it to be a typical college experience. It was not easy though classes were challenging. The hardest part was learning to learn at this level under these circumstances (away from home, large school, etc.) I spent the first 2 years growing up and the last 2 training for a professional school. If there was as good of "academically" challenging school in state, I would have went there. CU really is too big to get a great learning experience, but I gave a good general ed. -B +E0 ENGL 0174 I am always praising the education that I have gotten at CU, but I constantly find myself frustrated by the bureaucracy of the school. It is hard to avoid this problem at such a large university, but I think some measures could be taken to personalize the process a little more. +E5 -H0 ENGL 0756 That it didn't prepare me for jobs in the work force other than helping me communicate better in written form. Tell students not to expect to come to the end of your academic career totally changed and informed (at least not this major). Most learning will happen out of the classroom. +H1 +E0 +Y ENGL 1404 -Promoted independence. -a good, general education. -Responsibility was left up to me (sometimes good, sometimes bad) - math modules. -M0 -U E9 ENGL 1407 In ENGL, there should be a more clear course offerings list that is applicable for the long term planning that students must do. The way is is now, course offerings that satisfy major requirements change from semester to semester. I've had good and bad experiences here. The good ones were beneficial and the bad ones were not especially detrimental. Everything is available here to good students if they choose to seek out their goals. +E0 +Z0 ENGL 1525 I am grateful that I took the time and expense to get a college degree. I learned a great deal at CU-Boulder and every frustrating moment at a large university was worth it! +S0 +E1 ENVS 0023 That I had a great time! That I learned more from the interactions with people than in class but that I enjoyed solving complex environmental problems & evaluating the future of the world socially, morally, & environmentally. -E0 -S2 ENVS 0507 way too easy bunch of slackers +N0 -E0 -Y -F -O ENVS 0567 The experiences I have gained outside of the classroom have been invaluable. I am pleased that the courses permitted me to take enough free time to experience as many things as I have in the past four years. At the same time, the academic education I received here was pathetic. College proved a dry anti-climax after a high school program which used several of the same texts as CU courses. In high school, lessons focused on teaching some information, and then guiding students to analyze, critically evaluate, debate, present, and apply the material learned. Most of the courses at CU settle for stressing quantity over quality. It has been rare to find faculty who are willing to teach students to appreciate and USE knowledge, instead of simply memorizing it. This format was very easy to use. My greatest concern is that the first section of this survey was difficult to answer because it did not allow a distinction between what level of achievement I attained while at CU (which I beleive id what you are truly interesting in, isn't it?) and what level I had achieved before I started at CU. +E0 EPOB 0689 Mostly positive things, I say it's a little sheltered, but a good education. +X +R +E0 +E1 GEOG 0711 Overall it was a great experience! -Buffs football @ Folsom Field was excellent. -Skiing was most excellent. -Academics and schooling were hard, but not impossible, and now I feel I can solve just about any mental or analytical task given to me. N1 +D3 +E4 GEOG 0755 While I have enjoyed my overall experience at CU - I feel as though I have been unable to make good use of the opportunities ( in terms of research/clubs, etc.) that CU has to offer - because I am paying my way through school - by working 3-4 jobs every semester - thus, when speaking to other students - I recommend CU's diversity and the plethora of programs - while stressing the lack of support for "non-traditional" students. +P -S2 +S0 +E0 GEOG 1402 -growth, -good times, -academically challenging, -bad roommates. +S0 +E0 +S1 GEOG 1555 My experience was fun, exciting, and very educational both scholastically & socially. +E0 GEOL 0221 Attending CU-Boulder was a great experience. +E0 GEOL 1015 Well rounded - very broad. +E1 GEOL 1449 That I learned how to think critically most of all. I can now think my way through problems that previously would have seemed intractable! +E0 GRMN 0291 I've learned a lot. +E0 -F1 -B +S4 GRMN 0705 I like CU for the most part. It has given me an excellent education. However, I feel that I have been short-changed by having upper division courses taught by TA's or individuals with little or no teaching experience. That's a big shortcoming of the University for me. I also have brought this up before - the non-traditional student is greatly under-represented. I came here as a non-traditional student, and nothing was done to assist with a very difficult transition. I would definitely reccommend the University to someone else, but I would let them know what my qualms were. The staff here pne the whole has been excellent & capable. +E0 +L1 +L0 HIST 0218 I tell people that CU has been a nice, challenging, and enriching experience. I believe that the architecture of CU, the mountains, and everything about Boulder make it an ideal place for school. +S0 +E9 IAFS 1084 I had a great time at CU. I learned as much as I let myself. +D2 +P +E0 +N0 KINE 1418 -Experienced diverse activities. -Personal growth & development. -Excellent education. -Many extracurricular activities enhanced my experience. +D3 +L0 +E0 MCDB 1385 I think it is a great school, great diversity of people. It is a beautifully positioned campus and a very harmonious study time with lots of work and learning experience. +E0 +P +H5 MCDB 1574 I feel I got a very good base knowledge in my major. I feel I learned the most about myself, life, values, etc. from my experience at semester at sea. I highly recommend this program. FANTASTIC experience!! E9 PRCH 1164 Really hard work. +L0 +V E9 PSCI 0136 It's in a beautiful setting, it's friendly and has a good selection of courses with a lot of qualities. It's expensive and it's organization is heavy and slow. Be prepared to have to do a lot of footwork and ask, ask, ask! If enrolled in different colleges beware, rules might be different. +J1 +S0 +E0 PSCI 0226 This place rocks! I have had a great time and have made friends that will last my whole life. Good education and a fun time! -D3 +E0 PSCI 0256 Good education, but lacking in ethnic diversity!! +E0 +F0 -U PSCI 0488 I learned a lot here at CU. I had a lot of professors that were wonderful (Robert Pois, Tecza) and made class interesting and that I learned tons from. I wished that there was less science required, particularly as a double major because I couldn't take as many elective "fun" classes. (Van jGerven was another good prof) I have a good background from my education here. +E0 PSYC 0552 That it was an overall good experience. I wish I would have put more of myself into it. -B +Y +L1 +E0 PSYC 1338 Too big, almost like a corporation, too impersonal, I'm just a student #, suck you dry for every cent, I like my classes, beautiful campus, I am learning a lot. E9 +F0 -B WMST 0751 Employers: CU is a good school - if you make it work for you. The faculty @ CU are exemplary, however, it is too easy to get caught up in skiing/consumerism/sports rut at CU. If you are already a committed student, you can leave CU w/a solid foundation. Parents: I feel out of place at CU. This school really caters to middle/upper middle class students. Working class students are hard to come by. I really feel this way with the treatment from financial aid (although this is not entirely CU's fault) I feel like this campus is unfortunately becoming more tech. & business oriented at the sake of the arts. This is a greater trend, but it is disappointing to see it @ CU. The elitist attitude of the sciences are creeping into the philosophy dept. and obviously the WMST degree fiasco brought this attitude to the front and center. Liberal arts students are not getting their degree to increase their marketability - if they were concerned about that they would be business/engineering students. So, requiring liberal arts programs to defend themselves in this way to maintain or increase funding & programs is absurd. Why do we have regents who make academic decisions for CU who are only concerned with marketability? What ideas do they have about knowledge? Academics? I really feel like CU is a business - not a university. +E0 XXXX 0207 That I have a much more broad understanding of what is going on in the world, therefore, I can look at an individual person and event with a very tolerant attitude and with much understanding. +E0 -A0 XXXX 0407 CU Boulder is a good academic institution but lacks in some areas. It does provide a good education and I am proud to be a potential alumni in the next year. If the problems could be solved about advising in the large school of Arts & Sciences, students will gain the best education in 4 years time. +F0 +E0 XXXX 1512 Well rounded, good professors, (for the most part), good learning environment. --Business and Administration +V +S2 +E0 ACCT 0047 I found CU-Boulder a weird place to be, however, once you get used to it, one can really enjoy, benefit and appreciate Boulder. CU-Boulder offered me a wide selection of different courses I could choose from that interest me. In addition, if one wants to do something, be active, get others together, it's not hard to do. People are generally active and open to new ideas. Overall, great experience, great place to broaden your mind. E9 +N0 ACCT 0333 Overall CU was an excellent choice. It is a great school with a lot to offer in a variety of fields. It is smart to pick your major as early as possible to plan for future course work. Also, as one of the disadvantages of going to a big school, you must take charge of your own goals and objectives. If you do so, it will be a very rewarding experience. E9 +D3 ACCT 1221 It is a great learning institution if you work hard and work towards the right degree. There are some majors at CU which aren't as strong as others and I would definitely point that out. The one major strength of CU is it is very diverse and you meet people from all over the country and the world. +S1 +E1 +D3 +F0 FNCE 0282 Extraordinary experience from all aspects: Social, educational, cultural, etc. High-end professors, who are always willing to help CU students pursue the best in themselves. +V +E0 FNCE 1581 I think a unique part of my education has been the variety of courses that I have had the opportunity to take. In hind-sight the well-rounded aspect of my education has given me a competitive advantage and a more worldly perspective than other students. I think that all students should be encouraged to broaden themselves during college and get away from the sometimes myopic perspective that some business and engineering majors tend to get. +L0 +E0 INFS 0081 Great school, great location, great experience. +S1 +E0 -B INFS 0512 The social environment and the academic experience is great. THE bureaucracy is the pits. If you ever have to deal with the institution you are in for some hassles. E9 +P +E0 INFS 0675 That it was hard work & time consuming but I learned a lot about myself & my field. I hope to excel in the industry & further my education. +X +E0 INFS 1183 CU-Boulder is an excellent experience in every aspect - academics, social, and athletics. It strives to be the best in every area, offered many options for all different students & people. Most importantly pursuing improvement wherever needed I compare CU-Boulder many times to my previous undergraduate experience and I wish I had chosen CU-Boulder the first time around. +E0 +J1 +S0 +L2 MGMT 0331 I had a great experience. I was able to get good schooling and had the opportunity to take part in social activities. Boulder is a great place to go to school. +E0 MKTG 0116 Challenging. +E0 +N2 +H1 +R MKTG 0616 I tell everyone I can that CU Boulder provided so many opportunities for academics, leadership, membership in organizations, and recreation that I don't feel I could have spent my college years in any better way. -L2 +E0 MKTG 1496 The school work for me was overwhelming, bur rewarding. I don't care a great deal for the city itself, however, my experience at the university made up for the city. +S0 -E0 -M1 XXXX 0277 I always tell people that it has been great @ Boulder because of my social experience. I tell people my education hasn't been that great. I feel like I was skimped on some of my education in the Business School because of the change to the BCOR program. +H3 +H4 +P E9 XXXX 1069 My most significant learning experience at CU-Boulder was to learn to organize my time better. It is hard to balance school, work, family, friends, boyfriend, extra activities, etc. all at the same time. I learned to pick up from my mistakes (a 1.7 my freshman year) and strive to do better. (a 3.7 the next semester) I also learned being myself is the best way to be. --Engineering and Applied Science +E0 -H2 -T AREN 0577 The engineering education is great but - we're not taught how to communicate with others (the laymen) in the world. I feel as though I have been molded into an 'engineer', ignorant to culture, geography, social/political movements. There's not a lot of extra time to spend on these things because the Eng. curriculum is so intense. You can't just make 'scientists' or 'engineers', you're making real people for the real world. P.S. Books cost too much, we're forced to buy them - it's unfair! Buy back is not enough. Solution - issue lap top computers to new fresh. The cost of books for 4 years exceeds by far cost of 1 lap top Doesn't kill all the trees! +E2 +I3 +N4 ASEN 0052 I tell people more about the design projects I'm working on - for a class or my job in the laboratory - then anything else. First of all, because others can relate more easily to that aspect of my education (engineering is hard to talk about to non engineers), and because that's what's really interesting for me also. Maybe more than the design projects though, I tell people about how my latest hockey game came out ( if I scored, got anymore cool bruises, etc.) +E0 +E2 +F0 +L2 ASEN 1108 I couldn't have made a better choice. I had several options before coming to CU. After making my decision I thought I might later have reservations. I didn't! I got an excellent education, participated in amazing research, had wonderful faculty, and enjoyed life in Boulder. It was definitely the right choice for me! +E0 +F0 CHEN 0205 Good experience, great faculty. E9 CHEN 1114 I worked hard to get a degree. +E0 CSEN 0037 My experience here is on the overall a very good one. I feel I have accomplished what I aimed for. E9 EEEN 0316 The school was good, many great experiences. However, you must keep on top of things, CU doesn't make many processes easy. +E0 +L1 MCEN 0122 It has been a great learning experience. Nice place to live and grow as a person. Nice learning environment and good knowledge acquired in this university. +E0 MCEN 0183 It was a good experience, and I'm glad I did it. +J1 +E0 MCEN 0704 Good and valuable. +E0 +N0 MCEN 0861 There is so much to do: lots of homework and lots of opportunity for extra-curricular activity. +S1 +L0 E9 MCEN 0995 I enjoyed the atmosphere most. Many people enjoyed doing active things away from school (biking/skiing/camping). Also, the social scene was very active. Academically, you could push yourself and get a great education, but you could also slide by without much effort if you so choose. It was up to the individual to make the most of it. --Architecture and Planning E9 -L2 O ARCH 0825 Good. They are what you make of them. Too much "Boulder" fashion, but that CU is headed in a positive direction (despite too much corporate presence). +S1 E9 ARCH 1343 CU is a great place to go to school, if you are enjoying being a social and "laid-back" kind of student. If you want a good degree, and good grades to go along with it, it may be difficult as you must be very disciplined. --Journalism and Mass Communication +S0 +E0 ADVT 0289 It was a lot of fun & a good learning experience. +J1 +E0 ADVT 0721 They were great and education in an all encompassing manner. +E0 +C0 NSED 0092 That I don't think I've suffered by going to a public school. I've been given many professional opportunities at CU. And I am basically satisfied with my experience. I think my education will be a good background for whatever endeavors I pursue QID0231 That it has changed from when I originally started in 1993. The diverse & interesting/unique environment that CU & Boulder, as a city, used to have is gone. Now if you look around - all people look the same. Also, I feel that education level has gone down as related to other schools. ACADEMIC REPUTATION (OF MAJOR/SCHOOL PROGRAM) --Arts and Sciences +E8 -X -E8 BASA 0963 It's a decent school, with some amazing programs (Aerospace, Biology), but it's priorities are skewed. Football is fun, but the percentage of funding given to sports is grossly out of line with real-world balance. The Business School (in my experience) is marginal, the staff/faculty are rude and uncaring. I would vehemently discourage someone from attending the Business School. -D3 -E8 BCHM 0016 -L2 -Z0 -E8 +M1 -X -B CDSS 1275 CU is stogie. Too many students clog Boulder with vehicles. CU not innovative. Really annoyed about the athletic fee. Football coach over paid. We don't need more students in Boulder. The University has total disregard for the wishes of Boulder, ie Flatirons property. However - I liked my department very much. -Y -E8 CHEM 0396 To be frank: Too many bull shit classes, I feel this give the university a bad reputation. In turn I think this attracts individuals who are not interested in learning, & are interested in socializing & having fun. -E8 -U +V +A0 -M0 +N3 -E2 C1 +D3 +F0 ENGL 1161 Coming from England, I found being in America culturally enriching. Obviously, I learned a lot about the U.S., but in contrast, I've also learned much about Britain. I loved the broad range of courses I've chosen (and been forced to take). The core needs to be modified - most of the courses I took were REALLY boring and a waste of my time, although I can't quite say how (other than smaller classes and teachers who don't seem to be reading directly from a textbook). The Ethnic Studies Department needs to be expanded as does the Religious Studies Dept. There needs to be more core emphasis on these areas as it is the only way cultural fissures will be healed. The emphasis on Science seems to me misguided. My advisors have all been really helpful and friendly esp. Janet Hard in English. To quickly return to the science issue, I realize that science core is to broaden horizon/knowledge of those with science aversion/phobia, but if such an aim is to be achieved, the science courses have to absolutely, beyond a doubt, be brilliant. They are not (at least anthropology wasn't). I really like the library + media library; I was always discovering new things. I wish I'd visited the faculty more often, since I've started recently to discuss work or to just to talk - they are very helpful & friendly. P.S. There should be some more emphasis on research, since I took one course in all my four years that required it, which was too bad. +S1 +E8 ENGL 1242 I draw a lot of comparisons between CU Boulder & Whitman College (the two colleges I've attended). Whitman was an academic environment whereas CU is a social environment. It is difficult to judge which is better (social or academic). Regardless, CU Boulder has a better reputation both academically & socially. -B -T +E8 -Y ENGL 1253 For such an expensive school the quality of my education aside from the WMST Dept. Was very poor - too many classes w/grad students teaching, horrible financial aid packages and a slow, aggravating & inefficient system for transfer students & horrible wait list red tape to deal with!! +E1 +E8 -S4 -S2 ENGL 1283 That overall, it's a pretty good school. I've enjoyed learning the theory behind things here. It's given me a critical thinking edge that I didn't have before. You do have to fight and win for your own education amongst the slackers and the personality clashes w/some of the staff, but it can be done, and do you well. +E8 +D3 +M0 ENGL 1432 Overall the quality is excellent. I've been exposed to a variety of ideas and people. For the most part my major was structured enough that I knew exactly what I had to do in order to graduate. +E8 E9 +S0 +E0 ENVS 0068 I love it here - it's a great school with a lot going on - you just have to work hard to find the opportunities you think fit your life. CU offers fun & is challenging - overall good experience. -B -E8 -N3 ENVS 0876 The bureaucracy here seems so excessive--I requested that transcripts be mailed and was told they would be mailed the next day, only to find out 2 months later that they were never mailed. Something like this could have potentially been very damaging to my career or graduate school applications. Standards here are not as high as they could be. Too many classes are way too easy to pass. It would mean more to have a degree if it were harder to get As. The computing services are inadequate. At any given time, it seems that probably a third of the computers in any lab you choose are not working right. Especially during the day and during finals time, there simply are not enough computers. Many of us depend on these computers to do work for school and need to be able to access them without having to wait for long periods of time. +E0 -S2 -E8 FMST 0284 IT opened my mind to a great deal but, at times, due to a lack of effort and interest on the part of other students, my classes failed. It is hard to have a healthy educational enviroment when there are so many alcoholic party hard fools in our midst. I wish CU had stricter admission requirements. I got into every school that I applied for but I turned down UCLA and Berkeley for Boulder. Why? I don't know. I don't regret it but I wish saying I went to Boulder could mean as much as saying "I went to UCLA." +E8 +Z0 -Z1 +J1 GEOL 1064 CU-Boulder is a good school in a beautiful setting. It suffers from its size, in that you can be in a class with 500 other students, but most classes try to compensate for that. Sometimes one can feel lost or insignificant, but as a whole, I had a good experience at CU. +S1 +T +E8 HIST 0168 I transferred from Fort Lewis College in Durango in 1996. I am very glad I did b/c my experience at CU has been more complete as the school offers more programs, areas of study & recreation. It is a very respectable school with reasonable tuition fees. I am proud that I will be an alumni of CU-Boulder. +E8 +T -O IAFS 0775 Great international affairs program, affordable, not enough academic scholarships. +L0 -E8 +H1 +Y KINE 0344 I find myself comparing C.U. to Penn State a lot. The location of C..U. is great, however C.U. does not seem to have the school pride Penn State does. It lacks tradition. I really liked the courses in my major here at C.U. I learned a lot about leadership and team work on the crew team here. +E8 MCDB 1058 That my major program is one of the most challenging Bio programs in the country and I'm proud I've got through it b/c it was hell. +F0 +E8 MCDB 1361 Good science program - Important to choose your professors well - some excellent, some average (but not good personally). You have to have a good feeling about your prof. +E8 -Z1 RLST 0797 Very positive with regards to my major. Large classes did not foster a positive learning experience. -L3 -E8 -S2 SPAN 1586 Never in my entire life have I encountered a populace (I speak not only of C.U. students) which is so incalculably pretentious, shallow, limited, pedestrian, and arrogant. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the undeniable dearth of both legitimate challenges and high expectations. In sum, my fellow students in high school were more intelligent, more mature, more responsible, more humorous, more ambitious, more diverse (intellectually, ethnically, and otherwise), and far more engaging. I was in the 70th percentile, academically during high school. I've been halfway conscious during college yet I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa! That I'm in the top 5% of my class truly disturbs me. Hence, I feel that CU-Boulder truly is an intellectual and developmental cesspool. How the faculty puts up with the students is beyond my comprehension. 95% of Boulderites need a massive attitude adjustment, or perhaps euthanasia. I cannot wait to get the hell out of this wasteland... -J1 -E8 -F WMST 1047 C.U. sucks as an institution for higher learning. I came into this university feeling very confident of my academic abilities and am leaving questioning my abilities. This school sucks and the majority of the professors do not allow their students to critical think. Which is absurd!!!! I think that C.U. is full of idiots who just want to maintain their comfortable little job rather than teach! --Business and Administration +S0 +E8 ACCT 0249 -Fun, - great Business School. E9 +S0 -E0 +F0 +E8 +Y FNCE 1465 It is a well rounded experience. You get out of it what you put into it. The social scene is great and the academics is average. It is not that challenging but there are many classes and many professors that are phenomenal. I am enrolled in the CU Business School. Compared to Arts & Sciences, the Business School is much stronger and realistic and applicable. +E8 E9 FNCE 1492 That CU is not getting enough recognition as it should. I think that the quality of education is outstanding for those who are willing to work hard and select their classes/professors accordingly. +E8 +N0 INFS 1027 That it's an excellent university with many resources. Most importantly it's a well-known institution with many successful alumni, a lot of business come to CU looking for graduates. --Engineering and Applied Science +E8 -S2 ASEN 0054 CU is an OK school overall. The school of Engineering is fantastic, but outside that, there are too many rich kids here to ski and party. SOCIAL EXPERIENCES --Arts and Sciences -S2 -F0 ANTH 0621 I found myself telling people that students right out of high school should be more informed and prepared before they attend a university. I think people would be more mentally capable and prepared and serious about the experience. More importantly educators would be more inclined to engage their students in intelligent discussion with more challenging materials. Most of the time I felt as if I were watching a T.V. show when I went to class. Professors were Hollywood -like and how else is one gong to get their students attention when their main focus is beer, parties and skiing. 90% of students don't really want to be in college (or shouldn't be) at the brink of their freedom from home and dawn of growth and maturity. The professors played down to that mentality at the expense of students who wish to think. +F0 +S4 BCHM 0108 I have thoroughly enjoyed the faculty at CU. In the individual offices there are staff & faculty who are genuinely there for the students, but as a whole the students are viewed only in their ability to bring in money. -CU also does not back its students up. In Boulder, which is a rotten city to live in anymore, as soon as something goes wrong, it is the students who are to blame, and the school officials are the first ones on the band wagon. I noticed you didn't leave much room for our comments - makes me wonder if you really care? Here are a few more gripes if you will: -The advising flags that you place on freshmen and sophomores are in theory a good idea, but in reality don't help. All a student has to do is get that yellow sheet filled out & signed and the flag is lifted. Speaking from personal experience - you can write whatever you want on those sheets because the people who run those advising workshops don't have a clue and don't look at them. Students are not getting quality advising! It si much to easy to bypass this system and get lost in the academic cracks! -I think that every department should have a full time advisor in the office on a daily basis. Not someone who is an advisor part-time between teaching classes & feels like they are being punished in the workplace. After getting lost in all those academic cracks, it was impossible to find someone to talk to to get help. I still don't know - I'm winging it. Not every student is totally self-sufficient at all times. Some want a gentle, helpful h and to push them in the right direction. -What is the point of teaching the UWRP class at the very end of the students college career? By the time I could take the stupid class, I had already learned to write in the manner that each individual professor wanted. This class would be much more beneficial if it was a mandatory class that all freshman take their first semester. Then students would know what a college paper should be like and could improve upon it throughout later courses, instead of learning individual & departmental styles and having to forget them to pass UWRP. +S5 -B PSCI 0607 My experience at CU has been exactly what I pictured a "traditional" college experience being like. In the Engineering Center, they run labs in rooms where students need to do homework and other projects. Sometimes it seems as if the only free time is after hours and it is nt always possible to get to campus after hours due to jobs, other homework, etc. They need a few computer rooms where there will be NO labs scheduled and students can work at any time of the day. Also, I find the parking permits a bit extreme. They charge $100 for a semester and yet those of us who drive see no improvements in the lots, no new lots for easier access or anything of the like. Where does all that money go?? It seems a bit extreme to charge students $100 per semester for a parking permit. On the good side though, I love the campus. Everything looks great at first but after a while you discuss the negatives too. Boulder is a fake, whitey, wanna be Berkeley and it scares me how conservative it has gotten as a school. You guys think you're all this and that culturally diverse but you're just a bunch of white bitches! CU- fight song white power! -D3 +D3 -B BCHM 0219 CU is not diverse enough, especially in its student body and faculty. I have learned so much in school from meeting people of diverse backgrounds. I wish i would have been exposed to even more diversity. The beaurocracy on this campus is insane. In order to get any sort of paperwork accomplished (i.e. dropping a class), you have to hike all over campus and get 20 million signatures. -N0 -N3 CHEM 0812 There is no place to study and gather on campus. The libraries and UMC are awful !!!!! I spent time as an undergrad at UW Madison and the facilities at CU are far inferior. The UMC is too small and cannot accomodate many students. It is also not a very inviting place to be. The campus has very few places to gather and eat as the UMC is the only place and space is very limited. Also, Norlin library is very small and the resources there are limited. Often materials I was lookging for were not available and it was hard to find a place to sit. Also the policy of no food or drink in the library is really stupid when you are planning a full day at the library. Why not have a special area where you could eat from machines or get a soda so the library is more conducive to studying. I always studied at home and never used the libraries becuase of this. Or sometimes I would try to find an empty classroom. -B -U CLAS 0964 Too much red tape if you need something taken care of. Like the classics department. The faculty is good, but the administration is too bureaucratic. There is no personal attention (this would have let me graduate in 4 years). Also, I had no help choosing a major despite the large amount of time I spent in academic and career counseling. A third statement I say often is that many classes (even in different departments) lecture over the same material time and time again. This means courses should be more tailored to the major, and pre-requisites should be enforced. -B -U -A0 MCDB 0600 The school itself is mostly half-ass w/an over sensitivity to so many issues that it forgets how to be an elite institution. All the good programs are the science related ones. As a returning student I know many in the same position as myself and it is despicable how difficult is to transfer credits. And a lot of these credits are about "non traditional values". Give us a break. I have a friend who spent 2 years studying in Ecuador and was told they needed the fore mentioned class. As a result they were unable to get a biochem minor and lost the opportunity to get a stronger education b/c of anally rebentive administrators. -Z0 -N0 +J1 PSYC 0096 I have enjoyed CU immensely. My point is, i remember the advisor telling me to take some biology classes and did not advise me well about them...i than was forced to take one bio and one chemistry...anyway it was a big mess! Unfortunately that what always reminds me about CU... Oh, also why the heck do we pay such high student fees, and there are still not enough computers to use in Norlin!!!!! I'm just glad to be out of the undergrad dept, and i look forward to starting my masters in the engineering dept...where the students are much more respected! -B -D3 SPPR 1575 Recent safety concerns cause me to recommends CU with reservations. Increased diversity should be a goal that is aggresively sought and realized. --Business and Administration -B -A0 ACCT 0334 The university needs to have more organization. For example, the school needs to give out detailed information as to what students need to do in order to graduate. They should compose a list stating that students need to have a senior audit by so and so date, when the ceremonies are and what will happen there, where and how to get announcements made, where and when non- resident parents can make reservations for their stay in Colorado for graduation, and any other additional information regarding graduation prepations and procedures. Out of state students pay a lot of money to come to school here and it would be helpful if the school could give out more concrete information than just making the students find out by word of mouth and going on a scavenger hunt to find out what is going on. It seems very unorganized when the school tells students that more information will be available in March and April. By April, it is already too late to make the necessary changes and arrangements. Information regarding this matter should be sent to both graduating students and their parents. -T +N3 ACCT 1232 There are too many additional student fees for services I didn't use and never desired to use. It would have been nice to receive better schedule advising my 1st & 2nd years here so I wouldn't have taken so many wrong classes or classes that weren't necessary. +J1 COMM 0465 EVERYTHING GOOD! +J1 ENGL 1146 My experience was great! +J1 ENVS 0021 Great times +J1 EPOB 0654 CU rules - Go Buffs!!! +J1 FILM 0115 I enjoyed it and will be sad to leave. +J1 HUMN 0620 I wouldn't change a single thing about my experience at C..U. It is such a unique and special university. I don't think there is any other university quite like it! +J1 IAFS 0833 I enjoyed my experience at CU but the things that I want to do for a career don't fit my major and it is very discouraging trying to find a job and getting turned down because of my major. +J1 +T KINE 1328 CU has been a worthwhile experience. I wouldn't have attended had I not received in-state tuition. It (CU) gave me the chance to get away. -J1 KINE 1420 That I'm tired of this whole place in general and can't wait to get out of here. +J1 -A0 PHIL 0772 Overall, it was a great experience. Only area in which I was particuarly displeased was the professional advising program at williard. In my opinion, the law advisor was woefully unprepared for her job, seemed unprofessional, and acted like she did not have time for or interest in helping me. +J1 PSYC 1405 Love it, as long as you keep focused, which can be tough. +J1 SOCI 0195 That I had an all -around great time. --Business and Administration +J1 ACCT 0098 I LOVE CU!! +J1 ACCT 0806 That overall I had a good experience & am happy I came to school here. +J1 ACCT 0973 That I owe everything to CU. It is the greatest university in America. Just do not expect any good BBQ in the Boulder area. +J1 ACCT 0999 I find myself telling people that my experience at CU has been great! However, attending CU has served as a disadvantage in the recruiting process, because many top notch employers do not respect students from CU. However, I counter this by telling employers I would put myself up against the intellect of any ivy league student any day! +J1 ACCT 1293 I have many, many wonderful memories. +J1 -A0 -Z1 ACCT 1412 I had a great time here and the 4 years I have been up here have gone by very fast. I love C.U. I do wish the school would do a little bit better job advising students, especially the first couple of years. The big classes (400 + students) can be intimidating for a lot of students, but one gets used to them. +J1 FNCE 0128 It was great? +J1 INFS 1029 I pretty much enjoy it. J0 -D3 MKTG 0787 It was okay but I wish it could have been better. The reason is because my skin color got me in trouble with the authorities in Boulder for no DAMN reason!!!! -J1 XXXX 0292 I was telling my parents & friends about how much I disliked the school. I was having a hard time adjusting and focusing. I guess in the last year and a half it has gotten better with classes & class size & professors. I tell people now if you have the opportunity to go to school - DON'T WASTE IT!!!! --Engineering and Applied Science +J1 CHEN 0371 My experiences have generally been positive. -J1 CSEN 0490 Very stressful. -J1 EEEN BBB1 Sucks, go somewhere else. --Journalism and Mass Communication +J1 ADVT 0879 Incredible experience in every aspect! --Music +J1 MUSC 0458 It was without question an incredible experience. +J1 MUSE 1066 I enjoyed my experience, and I would do it mostly the same if I had to do it again. OTHER --Arts and Sciences -U ANTH 0415 Many extensive problems with core curriculum. One of those problems is the lack of parallels between my intersts and what counts towards core curriculum. It needs to be modified for the 90's and future. +F0 +P -F0 -P ANTH 1025 It has been an incredible experience interwoven with many truly difficult, stressful times and also some really great times. I have had some amazing teachers, who were enthusiastic, personable, and extremely interesting, yet I have also had many very dry, boring teachers who couldn't teach, could only lecture. Over-all, I have become a much stronger, more independent, well-rounded, and slightly more confident individual, who has learned how the 'system' works. +P BCHM 0276 I've changed more in the past 5 years (for the better) than all my years combined! -Z0 BCHM 1009 It was like any other big university: impersonal, politically correct, competitive, and frustrating. +P BCHM 1505 I'll tell them that I really grew up now. Even though my GPA was as good as I expected but what else can I do? I did what I was supposed to with all my mind and energy. I think and behave and perform tasks with adult manners. +H3 +P O COMM 0298 I find myself telling people that it does not matter what major you choose unless you are very specialized, (law, medicine, etc.) Because you do not really learn or remember the facts and figures of your major. What you learn is how to deal with problems and how to make deadlines. College builds character and introduces you to a wide variety of subjects, but you do not remember many specifics. Pick a major you can get through while still having a great experience aside from academics. Most of college is a joke and merely acts as a hoop that society says you need to jump through. It is important to jump through the hoop but do not stress yourself out in the process. Just get though school as well as you can. +H0 COMM 0411 CU was a place I entered as an 18 year old kid who wanted to run around and play. I leave CU the same kid with the same desires - only now I want to play in the real world with the skills, character and knowledge I have acquired both in and outside the classroom. +P COMM 0436 That I learned more and changed in more significant ways over the past 4 years than I probably will for the rest of my entire life. But, that what I learned at CU was something that the institution never intended that I learn - that Christ is the way. -P +O COMM 1130 It was difficult due to being a single parent and being older than most students. However, I chose to be here and am paying for it myself so I value it. I feel that I have gotten much more out of it because of being more mature. -D3 ECON 0151 There is no diversity at all! CU-Boulder is all white. -Z0 -Y ENGL 0813 I find myself saying that I wish I had gone to a smaller school and that I could never live in Boulder for longer than my 4 years of college, but that I have had a fun meaningful experience in CU and in Boulder for the last 4 years. (I also always tell people how horrible the UWRP department is and how it needs to be reworked!!!) O ENGL 1354 That the programs at this university do not really accommodate non-traditional students. (ie students who have children) There needs to be a parenting center! +P ENVS 0522 I definitely am better off, though I don't know if it is necessarily the specific classes I took, because frankly some of them were awful, or just having the time to establish my beliefs & opinions on some things. +Y EPOB 0111 The classes and lecture are good and usually easy to understand, but the tests on the same material are usually too abstract. I don't feel that they truly showed what I had gained from it. +Y EPOB 1106 There are many more classes that I would like to take if I were not graduating, but I am looking forward to taking graduate level courses. -D3 ETHN 0873 A very racist campus, but someone has to break the stereotypes. +F0 -M0 FILM 0768 About my professors & how they blow my mind daily, and about my disappointments with bad film equipment. -H0 FMST 1167 Not learning practical stuff that I will be able to apply once I get where I want to go. +H7 GEOG 0425 I get a lot of hands-on training in computer skills in my field (GIS) +F +Y HIST 0317 The teachers were very competent and presented good classes. +P HUMN 1033 Independent environment, without a lot of hand holding - work that's due is due. +F0 IAFS 1032 I've had great instructors and, fairly often saying, "I had no idea about..." +D2 IAFS 1279 It's been fun, but now it's time to move on. The diverse opinions are wonderful because no one ridicules you for an opinion nor persuades by extreme pressure to have one. -Z0 IAFS 1314 That though attending CU is a wonderful experience, due to it's large size, one often feels somewhat lost and the educational experience limiting as a result. -D3 IAFS 1610 I find myself telling people that CU was a wonderful experience yet lacked any student/faculty diversity what-so-ever. +Y JPNS 0353 Mostly about my Japanese classes and how much work we have. However, when I actually went to Japan, I felt like I had been pretty adequately Japanese. Before I left, I didn't think I knew very much, but I proved that wrong. I also talk about some of my international business classes. O KINE 0315 Being a 26 year old student has made all the difference in the world. At age 18 and 19, I was clueless, heard half of what my teachers said, and never saw my education as very important. Now, I value it more than ever. +F0 -F0 KINE 0835 Some very good professors who actually care about their students while others do not care how the students are doing and are terrible professors. -M -F0 KINE 0871 I am very disappointed in the program. If I had to do it all over again, I would have been a Business major instead. It's too bad that CU is such a Research school and teaching is only secondary. -Z0 -Z1 KINE 1087 I have enjoyed my time here at CU, but honestly, I sometimes wonder if my academic experience would have been better if I had attended a smaller college or university. In other words, I sometimes felt absolutely lost to overwhelmed, especially in those huge lower division classes. -A0 -M1 KINE 1224 That I would of liked more guidance when choosing classes. I would of picked a different major because KINES was not what I expected and we had so many required classes that there was not enough time for electives. -M1 KINE 1457 Enjoy school but hate physics. +H0 +F0 PHIL 1260 I feel very prepared to tackle life's problems or challenges. +M1 PHIL 1470 Even though there is really no way to become a "philosopher" without a PhD., it does not matter to me. I enjoyed college & enjoyed being a philosophy major. I also enjoyed taking my time learning things that help me to be a better person & not just a better worker. I love learning & college & I would do it all over again! O PSCI 1210 I'm finished! O PSYC 0538 I am burned out and don't want to be here anymore. -U PSYC 1007 Overall it was a great experience but that I wish the core class list was less specific and offered more choices. -A0 -U PSYC 1073 That the school confused me with advising and had too many core requirements. -D4 PSYC 1188 I think there is too much emphasis on diversity issues in the classrooms. Don't get me wrong, I think it is very important , but I feel like especially in the school of education, it has gone overboard. -A0 -F0 -Z1 PSYC 1603 Good, until my last semester when they notified me that I couldn't graduate because I was one credit short of an upper-division hour. They didn't notify me until March. This changed my whole attitude, and I can't wait to be done. Luckily I will still graduate this semester. The school is also too big and too impersonal. I also had a few professors/T.A.'s that had no respect for moral values. Classes were too big. +F0 +D1 RLST 1041 Faculty in RLST Department as well as some others, are respective towards students. Most were very interesting and made the experience intriguing and fun. There is an atmosphere of tolerance. The subject of class, race, gender is discussed in connection to many subjects. -T SOCI 0545 Please make the tuition more expensive, I am still able to pay for college by working full time. I really want to beg my parents for money soon. -Z0 -A0 SOCI 0734 That I have mixed feelings about attending a university that is this large and that there is little advising available. O SPAN 1089 Education is a must! O WMST 0363 I am glad that I am almost finished! --Business and Administration -U ACCT 0022 Cu needs to be more flexible with its core requirements because some of us do not need our hands held! O ACCT 0405 I tell them they need to visit. +P +H0 ACCT BBB3 Needed, I have grown tenfold in the last 5 years. There is no way I would have made it in the "real world" without my school experiences. -Z0 FNCE 0063 Campus is overwhelming and needs to have more orientation. +Z0 FNCE 0643 It may be a large school, but opportunities are there for the taking. O FNCE 1026 Getting by... +P INFS 0373 I learned how to share my faith in Jesus Christ w/other students & friends. John 3:16 Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we may have a personal relationship w/Him & live w/Him for all eternity. -A0 MGMT 0637 Business School advising office is extremely inadequate. I am not the only person with this concern. It is a known fact among business students. -T -A0 -U MKTG 0651 Too expensive, bad advising personnel in the Business School, not enough flexibility. O MKTG 1122 I experienced a wide range of situations and would have given more effort in various aspects if I could go back. O MKTG 1570 I talk to my parents and friends about what is going on in class. --Engineering and Applied Science -D3 -X AREN 0101 The reason why I would not recommend this school to a freind is that the amount of racism in this school. And by the way, can we please get a new coach for the Buffaloes? +Y AREN 0653 I find myself always telling my folks about how interesting my structural engineering courses are. These structural courses are what are inspiring me to continue to study the structural world! -Y -H2 AREN 0989 Exposure to more electrical classes. Also public speaking classes. -C0 +I0 CSEN 0630 The Career Opportunities and Internship Program helped me get my first computer job, so I continue to enroll in the program. I have not gotten much out of it since then (2 years ago), but I keep hoping it will pay off. That's more because of my marketability than their efforts, though. -F0 CVEN 0155 If I had more money, I would have gone to a private school-- where professors get paid if they do their job right or they don't hire them at all. O EEEN 0803 I want to get my B.S. I can't wait to get back to the real world and out of this "alternate reality" called academia. -F0 MCEN 0099 That I am not very impressed with the faculty. There is too much emphasis on research and few faculty members have experience in industry which they can pass along to the students. -M0 -U MCEN 0471 If you are living in Colorado already, CO may be worthwhile. CSU probably has a better ME dept., but it is not ranked as high. If you are living out of state, I would suggest that you apply to a more organized dept. (at another school) with a more thorough curricululm. The politics in the ME dpet. here can be obnoxious so watch your back. --Architecture and Planning -U ARCH 0283 I wish that I could take just one damn basic painting class. But I was never allowed as I wasn't a FINE ARTS major. I feel that this segregation between colleges is bullshit. I understand the importance of allowing students within that college the necessary access to their core curriculum, but I strongly suggest you adjust the current policy. +H6 -P ARCH 0544 Curriosity/exploration/self motivation are more important than grades. I wish I had learned that earlier on. O DSGN 0076 I tell them about the unusual things that happen. I.e. usual college stories. -D3 PLAN 0339 Not much diversity in socio-economic groups. CU is a galaxy of utopia! --Journalism and Mass Communication +Z0 ADVT 0912 That I enjoyed my experiences here much more once I found my niche in a major and socially. It's a big school, but all that means is that you must create an intimate existence for yourself. +R ADVT 1162 Great place to be if you love the "outdoor" life. O BCNS 1333 Glad it's over. -M0 -C0 BCPM 0843 The Journalism School is disorganized, has an unqualified staff and does little to help students find jobs after graduation. (meaning people who work in the J-School, receptionists, in the equip. vault, internship office, etc.) There is poor communication to students - I've had to call them myself to ask important details about graduation, etc. They are so disorganized! -Z1 O NSED 0398 I usually say that the school is fairly large, so if one likes big classrooms, one would like it there. Otherwise, w/the right counseling and direction, the CU experience can be a very positive one. +P NSED 1384 My most significant learning experiences were when I was in classes and knew/realized that school really isn't everything in life. --Music O MUSC 0491 It was a good place to begin. |
