If a major program has 10 or fewer students, then the four-character major code is represented as XXXX to protect the respondent's anonymity. For a translation of the letter codes that represent the themes under which each comment was coded (e.g. +EO=positive general academic experience, see the document: "Most Significant Learning Experience and What Tell Others about CU-Boulder: Codes and Themes." For a translation of the four-character SIS major codes see the Major Translation Table--last retrieved from Information Resource Management's web page on March 23, 2000. HANDS-ON/REAL LIFE SKILLS --Arts and Sciences -H0 ANTH 0399 I believe that my most significant learning experience at CU was that the classroom, though excellent for theoretical concepts, falls short when one considers practical knowledge and application thereof. +H5 BCHM 0276 Doing study abroad in Paris. +H3 BFAS 1117 My most significant learning experience at CU-Boulder is definitely time management. Being an older student who lives off-campus, I often find myself being overwhelmed with reading assignments & papers while also having to deal with personal obligations (i.e. working, paying bills, keeping a tidy apartment, etc.). +H0 +E1 CHEM 0578 Practical lab work was the most significant because it gave me an opportunity to see what the "real world" is like, to succeed on an independent project, & fine tune my analytical skills. -P +H6 CLAS 0964 Consuming vast quantities of liquor as a freshman. Learning Latin. +P +H3 COMM 1500 The most significant experience during my time at CU-Boulder was the opportunity of living on my own in my own apartment and my own rules. It helped me realize the responsibilities I had living on my own and also helped me manage my time more. +H5 ECON 0153 Study abroad. It really makes you open your eyes and see what else is out there. It was the best growth experience I have ever done. +H4 +E0 +V ECON 0830 I worked full-time plus during my time at CU to pay for tuition & I feel that my biggest learning experience was finding a way to balance work & school, the same way I'm going to have to balance a career & family life. The variety of classes also broadened my mind & exposed me to things I had not realized before. +H5 ECON BBB2 Studying abroad. It was (by far) my best experience - Isn't it ironic that this occurred while away from CU-Boulder?! +H5 ENGL 0321 Going to England for a year study abroad. Amazing or should that be brilliant! +H5 +E4 ENGL 0813 Besides study abroad in Scotland, my senior honors thesis was the most significant learning experience I had here. +H5 +N4 ENGL 1238 Studying abroad in Florence Italy for a yea CU, it would be participating on the ultimate frisbee club the year we went to nationals. +S1 +H4 +S0 +S1 ENGL 1242 It is extremely important to expand your social horizons. I've found that focussing on school is not the most fulfilling thing to do when so much else is going on. A person should be responsible but also have fun. +Z0 +H2 +S1 EPOB 0546 I think CU because of its size has made me open up much more than I originally thought I could. I'm not afraid to talk in front of people and in general am much more sure of myself, I think that came from experiences both social & academic. +H6 EPOB 1163 Learning to enjoy learning:) +H0 EPOB 1388 The most significant part of my study here was learning the practical applications of biology. +H5 FILM 0180 My study abroad experience in Italy. +H5 GEOG 1039 Studying abroad. +N4 +H1 GEOL 1015 Leadership skills in marching band. +H5 GRMN 0291 Studying abroad in Germany! +H3 HIST 0105 Time management +H5 +I0 HIST 0218 -Studying abroad. -Internship. +H5 +E4 IAFS 1386 During my time at CU-Boulder the most significant learning experience was completing my honors thesis and attending Semester at Sea. +H5 JPNS 0353 I feel that through both of my degrees, I actually have a very solid foundation of general knowledge. Study abroad was a great experience. (I went to Tokyo for 6 months). Words can't explain how much I got out of it. More people should be aware and have the opportunity to go abroad. +H1 KINE 0196 To survive on my own. If you don't take care of yourself you will definitely get lost and forgotten. I learned to make myself important and read and question everything! +F0 +H1 KINE 0344 1. Dreading taking chemistry, then taking it from Prof. Margaret Asarvature. She not only helped me learn and like chemistry, she changed the way I should approach challenges in the future. C.U. would be a better place if more teachers have the passion and willingness to help students as she does. I hope I can some day have an effect on people the way she had an effect on me. 2. To be your self. +H3 KINE 0360 How to manage my time and utilize the things that are offered. +H5 KINE 0835 The semester that I took on semester-at-sea. +E4 +H0 KINE 0841 dissecting a cadavar/writing a scientific paper +H1 +H8 +H2 +E2 KINE 1087 Either working as a facility supervisor at the Rec Center (I learned tons of leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills there), or working in a cardiovascular physiology lab with a kinesiology professor. +Y +E2 +H0 E9 KINE 1585 Out of courses, I would have to say Exercise Physiology. This class was very challenging & actually had labs that were practical to real life experiences, fun, interesting, and I always found myself excited to learn more. In addition, learning how to balance my life between school, work & social life. +H4 +P -B PSYC 0538 I learned how to manage my time w/juggling full time school & full time work. I also learned how to be more assertive in dealing w/financial aid! +S1 +E3 +H6 PSYC 0595 -Group interaction and group projects. -Studying the anatomy of the brain and learning about how your brain processes information while processing that information. +P +H4 PSYC 0799 My most significant learning experience here has been to deal with a lot of stress and pressure. I have learned to use myself as a support system. +H3 PSYC 0936 Managing my time. I rushed through my first two years and got bad grades because I felt overwhelmed. I never thought I could do it in four years. By the time I caught my breath I had several Cs on my GPA and I needed to take an extra year to relax and take the classes I wanted to take. +H0 PSYC 1185 My sociology and women studies classes taught me very importantly lessons about life and people, Issues that apply to life. +H5 SOCI 1370 Study abroad program to Australia +H0 SOCI 1416 Praticum in the school of education +H5 SPAN 1175 Studying abroad in Regensburg, Germany. +H5 XXXX 0340 Studying abroad really opens your eyes to the rest of the world and also makes you take a closer look at where you come from. It was also important that I went for an entire year in my opinion and that was possible at CU. --Business and Administration +H2 +H1 ACCT 0098 Public speaking and leadership. +H1 ACCT 0133 Leadership learned through organizations. +H4 ACCT 0302 Learning to balance all of my activities and studying and work. +Y +H0 ACCT 0405 Profiles of American Enterprises course which gave experience listening to leaders of top corporations. +H3 ACCT 0932 How to manage my time. I had to learn how to do many things all at once and do them all with 100% effort. Only in a college setting do you have the opportunity to diversify your involvement in so many things at the same time. +H7 ACCT 0973 Computer skills. +H6 ACCT 1235 I think learning all the material from all my classes and applying it to my own thoughts, beliefs, and knowledge has helped me to know more about myself: where I want to be, where I want to go, and how I view the world. I think that getting an education, no matter what your major is, is the most important thing, because knowledge is key to improving your life and the lives of others. +H4 +H0 ACCT BBB3 Balancing work & school, & finding the traits used in work & school compliments each other. +H3 +S1 FNCE 1026 Time management & all people. +E3 +H8 +H3 INFS 0580 My most significant learning experience was working in teams and on group projects in my field. I learned to be more interactive and outgoing to meet people. It also forced me to join many organizations that I would not usually have been involved in. I've grown into a more confident person. +Y -H0 MKTG 0818 While I have been fairly pleased with my classes here, the real learning experience came when I was interviewing for full time jobs last semester to begin after graduation. This was an entire learning experience about myself, my values, and my goals for my future. It also forced me to examine what I really learned at CU, I will take some general knowledge with me although the nature of most class work is not really applicable to the real world. I know that I will learn almost everything on the job, but this is to be expected. In the classroom bubble, you can't expect it to be real life applicable. +H5 MKTG 0945 The study abroad program that I did my junior year at CU. I learned more about the European political & economic situation then I could have ever learned from any class. --Engineering and Applied Science +H3 +P AREN 0844 Learning time management and taking serious responsibility for my thoughts & actions. +H7 ASEN 0691 The classes that required computing. +I0 +H4 ASEN 0943 Managing 2 jobs, taking 44 credit hours over 2 semesters, and dealing with graduation stuff. +E2 +H0 ASEN 1030 My involvement with the Colorado Space Grant Consortium in the Aerospace department has given alot of real world and hands on experience with materials and technology related to my field of study. I have worked on small space payloads for three and a half years and I attribute alot of my success to this program. +E2 +H0 ASEN 1189 The most significant learning experience was my involvement in space grant. Having the opportunity to work on real projects & get hands-on experience was great. +H4 ASEN 1547 I learned that balancing my interests and academics was the very key to my success here and will help me succeed in the future. They were real world situations and they were a tremendous learning experience. +H5 CVEN 0761 I did a study abroad program at the ITESM in Mexico. +H3 ECEN 1181 I've learned that I need to improve my skills in time management and stress management. +X +H3 +H4 EEEN 0454 Participating in collegiate athletics taught my how to manage time and prioritize my life. These two skills are more valuable to me than any classroom experience. +H2 +E3 EEEN 0641 Interacting with other people in group projects/meetings. +H1 MCEN 0017 Leadership. +E3 +H7 MCEN 0183 Work with groups, auto programming and using computer to generate & accomplish several other tasks ... +H2 MCEN 1584 Personal interaction in a business-oriented setting, internships --Architecture and Planning +H7 +H1 ARCH 0100 Independence, learning about computers and cameras... +H0 +H1 +I0 ARCH 0825 The unfolding of my knowledge of urban environments. ACADEMICS (eg, INDEP STUDY, ACAD PROGS) --Arts and Sciences -C0 -E0 -T ANTH 1411 My most significant learning experience at Boulder was that I realized that an undergraduate degree does not mean anything in the real world and that my major does not prepare me or qualify me for most of the jobs out there. Therefore, college was an extension of high school putting me thousands of dollars in debt. +Y +E3 BAAH 1011 I took George Riviera's class HIV/AIDS in art. We were required to do a collaborative art project & an individual art project in collaboration with a person living w/HIV/AIDS. The experience was invaluable in having to work w/others to create a coherent work & the emotional control involved. +Y +E7 BAAH 1212 My film & sound class was the most significant learning experience. The class mixed sound theory and aesthetics with practical work on pro-tools. +E2 +E7 BCHM 0048 The research I have done in Dr. Danna's lab and Dr. McIntosh's lab in the MCDB department has been most helpful in training me to become a scientist. The experience has taught me to apply what I learn in class to specific problems. +E2 -C0 +I2 +E4 BCHM 0924 1) Applying for a Fulbright Scholarship. - I invested skills in a variety of disciplines into a research proposal, and was thoroughly defeated by the on-campus interview. It was quite humbling, and I learned a lot about myself in the process. 2) Volunteering as a teacher of English as a second language at Baseline Middle School. The kids are so incredible, and they have taught me a lot about life outside of the Univ. classroom. 3) Writing on very personal topics (i.e. educational autobiography) in honors classes. +N4 +S1 +E0 +P BCHM 1335 I learned the most from experiences on the track/cross country teams. I discussed classes, books and philosophies with most of the team members and learned a little about many subjects. I also learned much about myself. +F0 +Y +E2 BCHM 1364 Working with Dr. Sueska in MCDB through URAP and on molecular evolution independent study. +P +E2 BFAS 0793 (Self discipline) through long studio classes in Fine Arts Department. +Y +E1 CHEM 0396 The courses listed below taught me critical thinking skills/problem solving.: 1. Chem 4181, 2. Chem 3331, 3. Chem 4532/4561. +E2 +E7 CHEM 0475 The absolute best thing I did here was to get involved with Prof. Michle's research group for two years doing independent study. I have learned an immense amount about grad school from the other grad students, picked up many practical lab techniques from working chemists, and this experience was vital in being accepted to grad school. +E2 COMM 0383 My most significant experience was being allowed to be absolutely creative in my art projects, I was given guidance, but was left to follow my own path. +E1 +E7 COMM 0436 I learned so much about truth and the evaluation of world views - about rational and systematic alignment - critical assessment - about reason and philosophy. +E7 +D1 COMM 1051 I had several classes (general ed. included) in which the reading material (mainly autobiographies & non-fiction) and class discussions taught me a great deal about the world, the lives of others, and the role that I currently play & can play in our society. Learning about other cultures & ways of life has really opened my eyes. E9 DNCE 0582 Do not take anything for granted, and take advantage of everything. +E0 ECON 0614 Meeting and talking to all types of people. Learning there are millions of ways to view people, events, etc. and yours in individual and unique but not neccessarily correct. The reality that there is a great world out there to be explored. +E1 ENGL 0482 Modern critical thought. +S1 +I1 +Y +E4 +E6 ENGL 1092 toss up: 1) Love object/loves relationships. 2) Resident advisor. 3) Class advisor & scholar w/president's leadership class. +E2 ENGL 1407 I learned most in doing laboratory research. +F0 +E3 EPOB 0848 Professor Asirvatham's regular Sunday review sessions. She is extremely dedicated & made chemistry a fun class. +E2 EPOB 0882 Independent research: It allowed me to spend a lot of time applying what I had learned to practical problems! +E4 +S1 EPOB 1539 I learned the most in my Army ROTC experience. I've learned much that crosses over to my everyday life. I met many life-long friends in this program. +E1 +E0 EVOC 0207 I found that many beliefs I have are reinforced by others who see things +P +E0 +S1 FMST 0345 I don't think I've had just one significant experience here @ CU. I think the most important aspect of my college years is the collective experiences I've had both academically and socially. I've learned about myself and others. And, through these experiences, I have matured. +E2 +N2 FMST 1167 My independent project and guest lectures. E9 +I0 +C0 GEOG 0711 (1) Going back to school - then disenrolling. (2) Struggling @ $5.00 hr. to work but doing it. (3) Getting residency, and re-enrolling, without parental support. (4) Sticking with it...following through. (5) Graduation. (6) Knowing I have an education which will allow me to get an excellent job! +E4 HIST 0688 It is difficult to examine my academic (or otherwise) career at C.U. and come up with one significant learning experience. Probably, though, the most significant experience of my career at CU is writing an honors thesis; make sure the topic is one you are interested in or you will HATE it. +E4 +F0 +Y HUMN 0773 I am going to write an honor's thesis with the best professor I have ever known, namely Adrian Del Caro. This opportunity is invaluable. He pushes students to exceed even their own expectations. His Nietzsche course is the best course that I took, although most of the others were top notch as well. +E4 IAFS 0775 Writing a thesis. +E4 IAFS 1032 All of the research papers and presentations I prepared forced me to understand topics - from Helms-Burton to post WWII restructuring of the Japanese economy - to a level of detail that comprises my most significant learning experience. +E2 KINE 0315 The laboratories for KINE classes were the best. +E4 +F0 MCDB 1058 My two honors courses with Mary Ann Shea of the Teaching Excellence Program (one class had 4 people and the other 10 - Experience of Education and Women in Education). She is incredible and really cares. +E0 +P PHIL 1582 I learned that no matter how many times people told me that getting good grades is what matters, I still think they're wrong. Education is in the experience, not the regurgitation of facts and figures. I took and succeeded at classes that interested me and were geared towards enlightenment, and struggled through courses that were geared to get me ready for grad school. I was beginning to feel like a chicken in a factory farm. +E2 PHYS 0392 NSF-REU program last summer E9 PSCI 1133 Whatever one puts into his or her college education, as well as life itself, is exactly what will be reaped. E9 PSCI 1210 Opportunities I created for myself. That has been a really important process - something I will take w/me wherever I go from here. +Y E9 PSYC 1435 My American Sign Language classes have not only been great in terms of a foreign language, but more importantly in terms of excitement and inspiration about school. +E1 +E5 WMST 1498 It was a combination of 2 things my critical thinking/writing skills and the differences in the middle & working classes. +E1 +E0 XXXX 0207 in the same light whereas before attending CU, I thought I was alone in these ideas about life. I have also been able to develop ideas and expand them and critically look at what they are saying. --Business and Administration +E1 +C0 ACCT 0368 I learned problem solving, but mostly CU opened my eyes to the infinite number of possible careers and life choices that are out there. It's wonderful except now I can't make up my mind! E9 ACCT 1412 The need to be active (pro-active) for both networking and social reasons. Do not procrastinate! +E0 +D1 BUUD 0162 I learned quite a bit about Business which is significant but I think also learning Spanish opened me to a culture I never knew was there. +I0 +E2 FNCE 0128 -Health Board chair. -Senior project (CS) +E1 INFS 0463 The value of a university degree comes from teaching people how to think; and solve abstract situations. The mix of classes outside of my major has made me a valuable resource to a business. In the computer fields it is easy to see the difference between those who can apply skills effectively and those who have not developed their thinking through university study. +E3 +Y INFS 0823 The projects I had in DATABASE, VISUAL BASIC +N2 +E4 MGMT 0503 The Presidents leadership class and the University of Colorado Student Union (UCSU). +S1 +E3 MKTG 0651 Interact with people and working in groups. +Y +E3 MKTG 0908 My Business Plan class and the competition at the end. Let me just say I learned a shit load of physics! +E2 +F0 +U AREN 0612 The studio class has been the most fun & flexible class I've had to date. The window of artistic expression is liberal & ideas are well critiqued. I enjoy prof. & the curriculum. +Y +E9 AREN 0989 The illumination class was the most significant because I had previously never been pushed so hard, nor had I pushed myself so hard. +E2 ASEN 0624 participating in independent study working on a satellite +E3 ASEN 0708 This semester has been my most significant learning experience. I have been able to design, manufacture, assemble, and test an aerospace mechanism. +E3 CHEN 1114 Learning about group work. +E2 CHEN 1550 Lab classes. +E3 CSEN 0035 Programming w/ others +Y +E0 CSEN 0036 1) Classes - both within and outside my major - were very helpful in making me a more well-rounded person and helped me to appreciate academics. +P E9 +E2 CSEN 1324 I learned a lot about myself in my first year here. My grades suffered in the process, but that was worth it to find out what I wanted to do, and what I didn't want. Academically, senior software project gave me a look at the industry before leaving school. E9 CVEN 1349 I learned (perhaps too late) that I'm not likely to do well in or even pass a class unless I put a significant amount of time outside of class doing homework or studying. +E1 +E2 +E3 ECEN 1277 Learning how to problem solve on my own and also with a group. I benefitted from all of my labs and group work. +E3 EEEN 0210 How to work with students to form groups to help you learn/compare work to see what you understand or need to learn. +E3 EEEN 0295 Working in groups and interacting with other people. +E2 MCEN 0099 The experience I gained while working in our research lab (center for combustion research). +P E9 MCEN 0898 Accepting that I might not always be above average. Not giving up when I fall short. --Journalism and Mass Communication +E0 BCNS 1333 Well rounded education. +E3 +D3 NSED 0398 I learned more outside of the classroom than inside. I learned, through my work with student groups and other related groups, that the world is very diverse, and I'd have to deal with a variety of people throughout my life. --Music +E4 MUSC 0414 Preparing and performing my senior recital. It was a cumulation of all of the work I've done here (voice lessons, diction, theater, stage design, costuming, creative writing) and took me 6 months to make happen. PERSONAL (eg, PERS GROWTH, RESPONSIBILITY) --Arts and Sciences +P ANTH 0725 I learned a lot about myself & who I want to be. +S1 +P BCHM 0440 My most significant learning experience was the last 4 years dealing with and interacting with all types of people. I lived with fucked up-crazy-psych people and fun-psycho people. I met a lot of people who thought like I did, who didn't think like I did, and some who I wanted to think like. Through all this I learned much about myself. +P CHEM 1524 Nothing specific, but the overall experience of attending a 4 year university was time well spent. +P +S1 COMM 0411 My most significant learning experiences came from the college life, itself. Conversations with friends to library time have strengthened who I am and have prepared me for my future. +P COMM 0447 My most significant learning experience has been learning how to create a life of my own and to choose the classes, people, and environment that I want to be in at any given time. +P COMM 0504 Taking responsibility for my actions - choosing to be active & energetic about my school career, & life in general, rather than being passive & letting things go. +P COMM 1165 I come from South Africa and being away from home I learnt about "me" and learnt to like who I was. +P ECON 0151 Like +P +S1 +Y ECON 0188 All four years have taught me a lot academically, socially, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The dorms, the people & the classes have all taught me a lot. +M2 +P ECON 0537 I figured out what I want to do with my life. I didn't figure it out until my junior year (that's why I'm taking so long to graduate), but I have figured it out. I guess that it is more important that I have realized what I want from my life now than realize that I made a mistake 40 years down the road. +P ECON 1437 Nothing I learned in class. That sometimes you are on your own, and don't expect help from anyone. Often it may seem like everyone is against you, but wise up to the challenge. +P ENGL 1525 Patience and delayed gratification! +P +L0 ENVS 0068 I learn everyday - I'm not sure if it is b/c of CU Boulder or my personality. - However, CU Boulder provides me w/ and environment I am personally happy at & comfortable enough for me to grow. -P EPOB 0689 Back surgery - taught me to enjoy health. -P FILM 0768 Both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer, so...life experience, whic helped me to better benefit from my scholastic experiences. +P +S1 GEOG 1402 Learning about myself, and how I relate with others and who I get along with. +P GEOG 1555 Living on my own, so far away from home. This is a time of incredible maturation and when a permanent part of your identity is formed. The experience made me grow up very quickly. +P IAFS 1279 Well the most was the partying scene where I learned how to deal with issues of drinking, drugs, and sex. +P IAFS 1314 Learning about life!! +P N1 KINE 1392 I think the most significant learning experience for me came when I realized how I needed to "make things happen". There are so many opportunities at CU, that if you want to experience something, you have to go do it because not every activity has a chance to reach out to every student. I missed a lot in my early years here because I was expecting to be spoon fed my opportunities. +P MCDB 1262 Learning discipline and determination, how to make myself do something I don't feel like doing and isn't fun in order to reap the rewards. +P PHYS 1150 Figuring out what I'm going to do. I still am not sure, but I've learned so much about myself in the process. Go, college. +P +J1 PSCI 1571 I learned how to grow - up & out, intellectually, physically & spiritually. I learned that life is what you make of it. And I learned that college is the best time of anyone's life! +P PSYC 1338 Nothing was more profound than experience of independence & learning to understand myself (still a work in progress). +P RLST 0797 The life lessons, tribulations of living on my own. +P +S1 SOCI 0814 +P SOCI 1403 the birth of my daughter -Z0 -L2 +P SPAN 1240 I transferred here from a small, private college, so my most significant experience came in adjusting to Boulder. --Business and Administration -P -B ACCT 1140 My most significant learning experience was being very sick for 2-1/2 years. Dealing with doctors, explaining to professors what was wrong & why I was missing class so often, and working with the politics of the university taught me more than any of my classes. +P ACCT 1293 Growing up. +P FNCE 0477 Time to mature and act as a responsible adult +P FNCE 1048 Learning to grow as a person. +D2 +P FNCE 1351 I learned about many different ideas people may have about life. I also was in an environment allowing a person to mature over four great years. +P INFS 0373 I met my future husband at CU-Boulder! -P MGMT 0820 Things don't go the way you expect them. Also, I learned that some people go out of their way to make life hell, such as A&S. +P MKTG 1122 Learning about myself, my goals and dreams and weaknesses. +P MKTG 1311 Independence. +P MKTG 1570 Certain life lessons I learned outside of class. +P TOMG 1207 Learning about myself -- who I am, who I want to be and what's important to me. I learned that grades are not the most important thing but rather what you learned and what you got out of the course I learned that your best friends are the ones who will not judge you and will always support you. I learned that no one has a whole lot of best friends but a lot of distant friends. I learned that to succeed, I only need to do my best and know why I'm doing what I'm doing and that it's right for me. I learned about drinking responsibly and that an MIP and a "Dog at Large" ticket is not the end of the world. I learned that even a losing football team is still my football team...how about getting Barnett? --Engineering and Applied Science +P ASEN 1523 Learning how to ask for help +P CVEN 0004 My relationship with God. +P CVEN 0042 The most significant learning experience I encountered during my time at CU-Boulder was learning about myself, who I am, who I can be, and who I want to be. +P +F0 MCEN 1031 My most significant learning experience was an increase in self-confidence and realizing that professors are people. +P MCEN 1059 life +P MCEN 1141 Think for yourself and do what you want to do! --Journalism and Mass Communication +P ADVT 0289 I learned a lot about myself being far away from home. +P ADVT 1204 That the skills my mother taught me are still the best, it was her approach that has got me this far. +P NSED 0138 That you decide your own successes and failures. --Music +P MUSA 1315 My most significant learning experience at C.U. QIJD0561 BioChemistry. +Z0 +Z1 +Y +I2 ENGL 1179 Being a student at a large university was a learning experience! I learned most in my smaller English and Education courses and the practicum experience required by the Education School. -Z1 -F0 -Y -B ENVS 0913 I don't find myself saying extremely positive things. - I find that my classes are too large, there's not enough professor/student interaction. We are too often made to memorize & regurgitate information for exams. There isn't a lot of personal thought or growth emphasized...i.e. multiple choice and true/false exams that anyone can take a guess at & pass. I don't think that CU uses the extreme amounts of money brought in by its students wisely. I also have the idea that the school really wants to promote itself to wealthy easterners rather than the state - even though it is a state school. Being confined to Colorado as a very low-income family, CU is probably the best choice in the state, my reason for coming here. +Y ENVS 1428 The classes that I have taken within my specialty of "water", especially the upper division ones, have definitely been the most significant to my education and career potential while at CU. +Y EPOB 0654 Field biology! +Y +S1 FREN 1268 This is a really hard question. I have learned and grown so much during my years at CU. My most significant learning experience hasn't just been one single experience. I have certainly learned a great amount through my classes, but I have also learned so much just by being a part of the campus community. +Y +F0 GEOG 0251 Jazz History - Willie Hill. +F0 +Y IAFS 0350 -A seminar with Prof. Rozek or Prof. Hill ( Medieval History) +Y +F0 IAFS 1526 I have had some very good classes and some very bad ones. In all truth the class that most significantly altered my way of thinking was one from my freshman year-Physical Anthropology with Dr.Vanguervin. +U KINE 0972 I enjoyed all my A&S core classes because they gave me a worldly view on everything from philosophy to race relations. +Y KINE 1155 My most significant learning experience was my entire Exercise Physiology class. +Y PHIL 0738 My Norse mythology class. +Y +I2 PHYS 0929 My classes and the opportunity to work at the Semmers-Bausch Observatory on campus as a volunteer. +Y +F0 PSCI 1045 Int'l behavior - Chan, Repression in America - Davenport. +Y PSYC 0552 My Behavioral Neuroscience class. +Y +D1 PSYC 0701 By far, my most significant learning experience was the Native American issues course, taught by Dr. Tinker. This course has motivated me to begin involvement in this area. This was the one class I took that wasn't completely structured w. the status quo in mind. It should be required for all students, but that will be the day. --Business and Administration +Y FNCE 0643 Applied Business Finance +Y -F0 -Z0 INFS 0306 Wow,all my IS classes specifically Database!!! I have gotten a lot out of my history classes and the NROTC class I took on management. The business school should create a class with a similar structure it was great. BUT... Every semester I fill out FCQ's and I have a feeling CU doesn't care. I have had some horrible profs. who either don't care about the students and teaching or are so preoccupied with something else that their class is worthless. I understand the concept of tenure, but I do believe some profs need to be let go or molded into good profs. I didn't pay thousands of dollars to go to classes where the prof didn't lecture and made the students present the class material as a "public speaking exercise". Public speaking is important, but the prof gets paid to sit in the back of the class and do nothing. In addition, I had a communications prof who could not communicate. I can say I learned absolutely nothing in that class. I have worked very hard to graduate and wish both the advisors in the Business school and a few professors would work as hard and with as much dedication as I have. +Y MKTG 0677 The Profiles in American Enterprise class. (BCOR 1100) I took the course and then I spent a year in the PTA program. This is where we write a textbook for the next semester on the CEOs that will be coming. The next semester we had our own recitations that we taught and we did a formal presentation in front of the entire class when our CEO came. This was the best educational experience I have had here!!! --Engineering and Applied Science +Y ASEN 1494 The Humanities for Engineers (HERBST) classes. +Y CSEN 0005 The survey of artificial intelligence course: it really helped me focus on what I want to do. +Y MCEN 0704 Engineering compilation. --Architecture and Planning +Y +F0 ARCH 0322 Studying universal design with Carol Hunter. It gave me a chance to apply my theoretical experience in the classroom to a "real world" experience. I learned so much about politics, society, and myself. +I4 ANTH 0589 The most significant was the opportunity to go on field school through the ANTHRO Dept. It provided hands-on experience in my future field. +F0 BAAH 0148 My Spanish teacher Carlos Cuadra, the most amazing teacher I've studied under! Word! -A0 -B BAAH 0431 When I applied to CU, I thought it would be a nice, friendly place to go to school. When I got here, I found it was nothing like that. The advisors were practically useless, and the bursar's and financial aid office were terrible to try and deal with. Everyone had different information. My professors would often tell the class that CU was trying to prepare it's students for the real world, but the real world is nothing like this. The only time in my life where I have done the quantity of paperwork that CU requires is working as a secretary. This experience made me realize that people are rarely concerned with others. This is the case at CU. I can't count the number of times I have heard the word "no" at this place. +O BFAS 0089 That without art and the expansion of the realm of reality it brings, life would be a bore full of mindless, uncreative time from life to death. +D2 CLAS 0366 To learn to look at a problem/idea/belief from more than one angle, and to realize that other views exist and are just as correct. -D3 +D1 COMM 0270 Despite a lack of cultural diversity, I have found incredible emphasis on much needed multi cultural awareness. The curriculum and professors have offered diverse content. +S4 COMM 0732 Getting close to my professors in my last semester. I went back to college after 20 years, marriage & family. The best part of the experience was the way I was accepted by students and faculty. -F0 -F1 ENGL 1495 How not to teach classes! I intend to teach and I had two awful teachers - a TA & a professor. Both insisted verbosity wasn't a big part of the grade, but participation was. Unfortunately they seemed to regard verbosity as participation - and ignored those who listen only! J0 ENVS 0021 I've yet to experience it. O ENVS 0522 That is a really hard thing to put in 5 inches of space, I could probably write a whole paper on it. +M1 +D2 ETHN 1488 Being an ethnic studies major in general was the most significant learning experience for me at CU-Boulder. Challenging mainstream understandings in order to strive for a true democracy remains a crucial issue for myself as well as it should be an important issue for the university itself. +N2 GEOG 0615 Being a part of student groups such as wilderness study group. -D3 HIST 0237 Realizing the omni-presence of skin color privilege and that we have a long way to go as a society in stamping out hatred. +J1 IAFS 0281 I don't have one experience, but my whole experience at CU was great. +F0 IAFS 1077 The time I spent Dr. Steve Chan's lectures - he is a super motivator & invited me to explore the issues at hand to a greater extent. +I0 KINE 0800 At my numerous jobs. +I0 LING 0832 My part-time jobs at Math/Physics library and Norlin library. Of course, my academics have always been significant in every way. +F0 MCDB 0959 The 2nd semester biochemisty course taught by Natalie Ahn was the most significant learning experience. She was dedicated and a powerhouse of information. CU needs more professors like her. +M1 MCDB 1361 Physics Dept. +I0 OPNO 1533 Working at Folsom Field. J0 PHIL 1260 No specific event. +I0 PHYS 1497 I worked at the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy for two years; although I don't plan on doing instrumentation research, it was a valuable learning experience in many ways. -B PSCI 0136 The surprisingly high degree of lack of knowledge about who is responsible of/for what among employees (different colleges) that ends up with me having to do the footwork. +I4 PSCI 0488 When I did my internship at the state capitol. That is where I really figured out what I wanted to do when I got out of school. +I2 PSCI 0605 Being part of the international national voluntary service training (INVST) program for 2 years. +F0 PSYC 0489 The teachers, I transferred so that when I took my upper level Psyc requirements I'd have the best education possible. The profs. made that happen, I am very happy with my choice to transfer due to my profs. +S1 RUSS 1512 Listening to other's opinions. -M1 SOCI 0069 I learned that in my mind - sociology was a better field than business for me. Accounting just wasn't right for me: my suggestion is to study hard and make sure you know the material really well. -B SOCI 0667 Ultimately, I'm different than/from anyone else. I existed as a number not as a person - until such time as I made my number be noticed or forgotten. O SOCI 0682 Learning how to be dependent. +M2 +D3 SOCI 0931 Having taken 2 years to decide on a major, I took 4 semesters of unrelated classes. I experienced many different fields of learning and avoided the redundancy of taking all classes in one topic. Another great aspect was learning that so many different cultures exist in this country (I am not from USA). -D3 SPAN 1586 I can't believe that the administration has not yet realized why there's so little ethnic diversity (as if that were the only worthwhile or conceivable measure of variety): the state of Colorado couldn't be much farther away from a coastline or a foreign country. Demographics - it's not that complex. +D1 WMST 0363 Studies of different ethnicities. -M0 +F0 WMST 0751 Meeting the one continental philosopher in the dept. before she (happily) retired. This radically changed the way I looked at philosophy, academia, and life. It also impacted what I was planning on for the future. I am saddened that this philosophy has been "relegated" to humanities & English debts. as the philosophy dept. becomes increasingly analytically oriented. It has helped me bring together both the arts and the sciences in my life. --Business and Administration +S1 ACCT 0784 Learning how to accommodate others or just learning from others in general (roommates situations). +M2 ACCT 0810 Changing from Music School to Business. +N2 FNCE 0419 FINDING MY AREA OF INTEREST AND EXCELLING IN IT. ALSO, EXPLOITING ALL OF THE OPPORTUNITIES (ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY) THAT WERE AVAILABLE. O FNCE 1334 when I was alone in the library +F0 FNCE 1347 faculty are really there to help +D3 INFS 0041 I respect the differences of culture, behavior, others but being here (US) ade me appreciate my own more. Everyday is a learning experience and everything is interesting! +S1 INFS 0388 I would say it would be much of the stuff that I learned outside the classroom. The social growth I experienced will be invaluable in the future. O INFS 0512 Not sure what you are asking. For one single defining moment, class project etc. or larger issues like social/mental growth. +F0 MKTG 0557 Talking to and getting to know my professors! J0 MKTG 0787 None. +I0 MKTG 1205 Probably the internship that I obtained through career services. +S1 MKTG 1282 Meeting people and interacting, learning from others experiences. Good situatutions which encourage group interaction. --Engineering and Applied Science +F0 CSEN 0140 The time I spent in courses taught by Michael Main and Vine Deliria Jr. +I1 CSEN 0238 The time I spent (2-1/2years) as an RA taught me more about myself and others than any class that I took. O CSEN 0774 There were so many I can't choose -B EEEN 0803 I learned how students can be taken advantage of by an institution and how the people in that institution can rationalize it away. +M1 EEEN 0910 Major related classes +S1 EEEN 1043 Learning to interact with others. +I0 EEEN BBB1 Working outside classroom. +S1 +N0 MCEN 0995 Having transferred to Stanford, and found myself unhappy with that school, I learned that school reputation is not as "vital" as society suggests. The atmosphere at CU is one where I learn more and am more motivated because I am happier with the activities available to me in Boulder and the people I am around. --Architecture and Planning +F0 ARCH 1186 Being able to speak one-on-one with instructors. +I2 DSGN 0076 Volunteer experiences. +I2 PLAN 0175 The most significant learning experience I have encountered at CU would have to be my entire 2nd semester of classes where I have been a participant in applying basic planning principles to real world problems for different groups around the state. --Journalism and Mass Communication +M1 ADVT 0912 Choosing a major. +X +J1 ADVT 1162 Being on a varsity sport team and going to school. +N2 BCNS 0856 CU Sports Magazine & KUCB radio. -L2 NSED 1384 I learned that Boulder is a town surrounded by reality and if CU were in a different town it would change the school but maybe in good ways. --Music +I1 MUSA 0008 Being an RA in Cheyenne Arapaho. O MUSC 0458 It has all been a melting pot for me; it is hard to say. O MUSC 1200 I learned to believe. +F0 MUSE 1066 The classes that I took with Jim Austin. |
