Tips for Printing Survey Reports

Printing pages with two or more frames

Some of our survey reports use frames for navigation, with a "Table of Contents" in a window at the left side of the screen and the report itself in a window on the right side of the screen. Clicking on one of the sections listed in the left frame will cause that section of the report to appear in the right frame. Before you can print from a web page that uses frames, you must click within one of the frames.

In Internet Explorer, click in the frame you want to print, then on the File menu, then on "Print", then check "Only the selected frame" from the "Print frames" box. See the section below on Printing a document made up of many HTML files for directions on printing all the sections listed in the Table of Contents frame.

In Netscape, click in the frame you want to print, then on the File menu, then on "Print Frame" or "Print Preview".

Printing a document made up of many HTML files

Generally, our survey reports consist of many separate HTML files, for example one for each section or chapter, and it can be tedious to manually print out each file separately. If the document includes an index page with links to all the sections, then using Internet Explorer you can automatically print out the index page and all the sections. Go to the index page, click on the "File" menu, then on "Print", then check the "Print all linked documents" option.

This technique also works for reports that are set up with frames. Click within the "Table of Contents" frame on the left-hand side of the screen, then click on the "File" menu, then on "Print", then check the "Print all linked documents" option.

Unfortunately, this method is not available in Netscape.

Page orientation (tall vs. wide, or portrait vs. landscape)

In some of our survey reports, there are wide tables and displays that may not fit on a page unless you adjust the page orientation.

In Internet Explorer, you can choose between portrait (tall) and landscape (wide) page orientations by clicking on the "File" menu and then on "Page Setup". Select the landscape option for printing a page with a wide table or display.

In Netscape, version 4.7, you must control page orientation via your printer's setup options. Click on the "File" menu, then on "Print", then on the "Properties" button, then try to find the landscape page orientation in your printer's options.
