Summaries of the Open-Ended Comments -- Introduction and Method

There were eleven long open-ended comments on the Graduate Student Survey. All but two of these questions were pertinent to only certain sub-groups of respondents--for example, to doctoral students, students in the latter half of their graduate program, students who had used career counseling, etc. Two staff members, one from the Graduate School and one from Planning, Budget and Analysis, reviewed all of the comments and summarized the main themes mentioned in the responses. They prepared two summaries of the comments: one pertaining to the questions for all respondents and another pertaining to questions for sub-groups of respondents, The summaries are not actual quotations from students; rather they are general observations of themes or recurring comments. They also are not necessarily representative of all the comments we received for these questions. The summaries have been reviewed and approved by Dean Susan Avery and Associate Dean John Stevenson of the Graduate School.

In addition, open-ended comments are being distributed by the Graduate School to department chairs, per Dean Avery's approval. The comments are provided on paper, with an introductory cover letter and a key to the survey items to which the comments pertain. The verbatim comments are organized by survey item and student level.
