Comments on: RACE/ETHNICITY ISSUES
ARE IRRELEVANT/OVEREMPHASIZED R QID 093 : What I care about is getting a good education and making a good life for me in Colorado. I have no interest in racial issues. I don't care. R QID 161 : This questionnaire focus' on people with you racial/ethnic group. The problem is mixing the groups. That is where the problem lies. That is also why I chose not to fill out the section. I do not judge or expect to be judged by race/heritage. R QID : Asian F- P- R QID 011 : Asian The questionnaire has written in a manner that made me think that it was sent ot me because of my race. Again, another way of singling out people. Diversity is a slow moving concept which means that people of other races understand that change is slow, so it might take a long time for things to be satisfactory. R QID 087 : Asian I think in reality, the more you talk about ethnic/racial groups on campus, the more I feel I can't communicate with others on a level of being the same human being. So it's kind of discouraging being from another ethnicity/race. Why can't we be all looked as just another human. R QID 199 : Asian I do not feel that racial/ethnic issues should be so important. I rarely have to deal with it, and when it does come up. I deal with it in my own way. R Q QID 231 : Black/African Amer If you already said every group, then why repeat and say including whites. Until people in the American culture stop focusing on the ever so delicate issue of race and being so intense about diversifying every aspect of life, we the people will continue as we are. Let's realize that different is good, but not if people feel that they must focus on why they are different from others. Instead let's live together and start striving for equality and education for people not colors. Thanks for the questionnaire. R QID 147 : Hispanic Race is not the only contributing factor to "comfortability" on campus. Sexual orientation, class, and age should also be factors. Also, image is not everything, and action to improve campus life should be pro-active, no re-active. R QID 263 : Hispanic Too much focus on ethnicity - I'm just me - not hispanic me. R QID 210 : Native American I hope you get enough information from this so that you can lay off on racial issues. I don't remember the last time I heard of a racial oriented crime or attack in Boulder. R QID : White K R QID 035 : White I haven't expirienced any racial discrimination, but have found a lot of diveristy. I think this questionare focuses too much on something that isn't there and askes questions about something the school goes for ... diversity. I think there should be a larger emphasis on the education rather than diversity. We are all here to get an educaiton ... the is just a bonus. R QID 092 : White I am white, what is the big deal? My god, if you imporve the academics at this school, people will start coming here. If I was of another race, I think I would resent the fact that CU only recognized me as "part of a racial/ethnic group." Why don't you divide people by major, or hair color? Division is division. Period. R Q- QID 149 : White I think that, unfortunately, racial/ethnic issues have become more of an issue than it needs to be. No matter what background a person has, the fact remains that he or she is human about all else. I know that many people don't feel the same about the issue of race, but perhaps if we as humans would look less at what makes us different and more at what makes us similar that it wouldn't be a problem. By constantly bringing up differences it is rubbing people's noses in it and causing more hurt feelings. I felt like many of the questions in this survey were leading, trying to make me see problems where there shouldn't be any. R QID 158 : White There are picnics for students of color. However, there are no picnics for exclusively white people. Another I've noticed, there is a black student union but student union for white, christian, jewish, etc. Why couldn't the black student union be combined with the student union?
Comments on: INCLUDE RELIGION
OR OTHER CATEGORY L QID 122 : Native American I think religious prejudice needs to be addressed. I'm jewish and the prejudice I've encountered from ignorant people that have been brainwashed by their religion is rediculous. K L QID 174 : Native American I think the school has done a good job of trying to reach out to the Native Americans here on campus. I have actually felt more discrimination not for my racial background, but because of my religious beliefs as a Christian. In a few of my classes things have been said about Christians that are stereotypical and biased, that can also be looked at as discrimination. L W QID 040 : White It is not ethnic issues that concern me, it is human issues that concern me. Generally speaking, the students at CU seem superficial and callous. They tend to be white kids from affluent communities in suburbia, USA. You people should stop talking diversity, and do something about it. L T QID 045 : White You fail to adress the issue of culture, I'm white, but I don't look like everyother white person. Diversity is not just race, it is religion and cultural background. The classes and academic factor is the only redeeming factor, the only reason I am here. Otherwise it is not enjoyable to be here. It is not enjoyable being called a slw of derogitiry terms in which I do not feel that I should write. This campus claims diversity yet has non, this school brings in clones from on general walk of life. L QID 104 : White This isn't under racial/ethnic, but more religious. There are a lot of religions that represented on this campus that are not Christian in origin that don't feel that anyone really cares that they are here. There seems to be a lot of pressure to conform to the Christian ideas, especially in the residence halls. L QID 163 : White As a white person I often feel like I have no heritage and that no one really tries to foster any pride in being of European heritage. I have felt prejudice because of the way I dress, act or the activities I participate in but not because of my race. L QID 221 : White There is also gender discrimination! For me, I don't feel discriminated against because of my race but do because of my gender. L QID 228 : White The conflicts at CU involving student body and me is that I dress differently, based on my choice of music and life style. Some peers judge me and look down on me.
Comments on: NO RACE/ETHNICITY
PROBLEMS PERSONALLY OR AT UCB F+ K QID 062 : Asian UCB has a long way to go to reach a good mix of racial/ehtnic diversity. Althought, UCB is taking a step in the right direction. I do believe that UCB has done a good job preventing (the encouragement of) prejudice. K QID 080 : Asian Not really. I am a white female who has encountered many different cultures and races and I feel I have benefitted from mixing with them. K QID 085 : Asian As a freshman, I haven't encountered many racial/ethnic issues. F+ K QID 140 : Asian I have not seen a lot of programs for the black community, I think there should be more. Race and ethnicity is under control, meaning not a lot of people even notice that there are minority students interacting with them. It is widely expressed throughout the campus (good job). K QID 180 : Asian This is probably the most no prejudiced area I've live in since I was much younger, and you seem to have many supportive programs available to those who want them. Q- K QID 175 : Hispanic I don't like how they classify race/ethnicity. So much depends on this that I think it divides races/ethnicies. You don't see much racism on campus and I don't feel singled out for being a minority. K QID 015 : Native American I've never had any cpmlications concerning my racial group. I do know that people of different racial groups have though. K QID 119 : Native American No, all is well racially. K QID 134 : Native American No. I haven't seen any problems at all. K R QID 035 : White I haven't expirienced any racial discrimination, but have found a lot of diveristy. I think this questionare focuses too much on something that isn't there and askes questions about something the school goes for ... diversity. I think there should be a larger emphasis on the education rather than diversity. We are all here to get an educaiton ... the is just a bonus. K QID 066 : White I don't experience any issues on campus. K QID 097 : White It seems as though there are many opportunities for all racial/ethnic groups to get involved and feel included. K B P QID 179 : White I'm sure it did go to whites I am white. My problem is not with ethnicity or race. It is with those that can't differentiate between equality, and reverse discrimination. K QID 262 : White I think everyone pretty much gets along well.
Comments on: DONT FORCE IT F- P- R QID 011 : Asian The questionnaire has written in a manner that made me think that it was sent ot me because of my race. Again, another way of singling out people. Diversity is a slow moving concept which means that people of other races understand that change is slow, so it might take a long time for things to be satisfactory. W F- X QID 024 : Asian Coming from New York, the campus is noticably "white." I don't see that as a problem since I feel comfortable in this setting knowing that the level of understanding and tolerence is high. Whereas, at times in a "diverse" setting, tension is even greater as social groups have a tendency to bond by commonalities including ones racial/ethnic background, this situation could sometimes cause greater segregation as outsides feel as though they have to play such role to fit in. Sad picture. F+ K QID 062 : Asian UCB has a long way to go to reach a good mix of racial/ehtnic diversity. Althought, UCB is taking a step in the right direction. I do believe that UCB has done a good job preventing (the encouragement of) prejudice. F+ K QID 140 : Asian I have not seen a lot of programs for the black community, I think there should be more. Race and ethnicity is under control, meaning not a lot of people even notice that there are minority students interacting with them. It is widely expressed throughout the campus (good job). F- QID 156 : Asian I am Asian American and proud of who I am. I think we should emphasize less on racial/ethnic issues. As long as diversity is stressed. I do not think the racial gap will get smaller because it will casue resentment among one group and stigmatize another group. I am happy to be a CU student because I want to be here and I am here. F- QID 144 : Black/African Amer Stop grouping people in different races, everyone should be addressed the same way. Equality will never be achieved until this has changed. F- QID 155 : White Don't try so hard. Don't seek quotas. Seek fairness and equality and truth. If you need 3 students to do a job, don't get 1 white, 1 black, 1 asian. Get 3 blacks or 2 asians and a hispanic. Do whatever it takes to get the best people for the job. F- W QID 248 : White I believe that the university should not discriminate between racial.ethnic groups at all. Entrance to the university and financial aid should have nothing to do with race or ethnicity. If the University is concerned with "not having enough of racial/ethnic group x," they should focus on making that racial/ethnic group more welcome at CU, not on brbing them, etc. I do realize that there is much less diversity on this campus than on many other similar colleges. It is up to the University to find out why. |
